280i alternator mounts
Discussion
Here are some pictures of how my alternator is mounted. Not sure if its a standard fitting, as it has a bit of a 'TVR Special' look about it. In the first picture, the large plate of metal that you can see to the left of the alternator forms part of the mount for the alternator and power steering pump, and is bolted to the engine block, with the front bit welded at right angles to this that you can see in the other two pictures.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the pics.
We're in the process of designing a new mount for my S1. I'm fitting cast rocker covers which are bigger than the originals, and the alternator is fouling them. We're dabbling with the idea of manufacturing them and selling them as there are a new range of cast rocker covers available for the Cologne now, and I wondered if the wedges suffered the same problems as the S. First major difference - you've got power steering! The standard mount on the S looks a bit Heath Robinson too, but it's smaller than that one as we never got the PAS.
Could re-design to allow a pickup for the 280i if it was PAS, but I can't imagine there'd be much of a market!

You probably know already, but just for info, I can confirm from those pics that definitely is *NOT* the original Ford bracketry.
On the Original 2.8, alternator is much lower down, vertically about half way between water pump and pulley, and PAS pump went on opposite side - I'm there will be a Capri pic somewhere on the web !
From that pic, it also looks like exhaust manifolds are fitted swopped over (or could be TVR specials), because alternator in original Ford position would foul the downpipe.....

As said the brackets were not ford but TVR..I had Delilahs alternator moved to the other side, At first i thought this may be a nightmare but its surprising what fixings there are on the V6 Colognes.
There are pre-drilled holes in the outer regions of the head..(O/S UK)..That accommodate both the original ford fitment for the alternator and the modified TVR version..On this side it was lowered on a bracket that makes changing No. 1 spark plug a right fiddly diddly job!...But there was the chassis and the steering column to consider.
When mine was fitted to the N/S UK it was thought that there may not be anything to line up the pulleys with but then there were two fitments for the power steering..The original capri PAS pump which sat on the N/S UK and the Montego ones that TVR used would go on the modified TVR alternator bracket..Even then some were different again.
Since it was converted to Electric PAS there was no need for the mechanical pump brackets so the one for the capri pump was customised to accommodate the re-positioning of the alternator...Work well...Albeit tight.
Cheers...Ziga

heres a couple of pics from engine bay. the alt is a lot lower than above pics. I'll try to get decent pic of the mounts tomorrow, but I agree they are probably standard capri ones.

Same as my wedge, and from driving/stripping several Cortina 2.3, Granada 2.8 those ARE the standard Ford mounts.marcus
PAS pump on Cort and Granny is on opposite side to alternator, slightly higher up. It wouldn't fit there in the wedge, because the fuel metering head is closer to engine than Ford setups. Also Capri 2.8 had a narrower air box, the wedge one is Granada.
It is pretty easy to make up new brackets though, as there are a lot of threaded boltholes around the front cam/waterpump cover. You just need to make sure pulleys line up for best fan belt life.

Good to see these pics. Wanted to get rid of the giant A/C-alternator bracket in my car. I found the brackets from a Cortina-Granada. Went to swap it out today but realize, thanks Marcus's pics, I see how it mounts. I'll need to swap my manifolds around to make the room and have down pipes fabbed as it's a USA spec car.
