Clutch fluid boiling

Well the clutch pedal has been getting long since BBWF and this morning was OK but usable so I went to work meaning to flush and bleed it this evening. Would you beliiiieeeve it there was a holdup on the M11 on the way home so I ended up getting hot under the bonnet in traffic and about a zillion more clutch movements than usual. Long story short it packed in and I had to sit on the side of the road to let it cool, then reached underneath with the 7/16" spanner and let some fluid out (I keep a small bottle next to the battery).
This got me home - just - so I'm changing all the fluid and fingers crossed it will do the trick. The old stuff was pretty grey I can tell you. Worst case is that the master is worn out though.
I'll also make sure the pipe is as far away from the exhaust as possible.

Yep - you did it Taffy! The master is FUBAR. Fluid pissing through the rubber boot inside. Ebay here I come!Just checked my purchase history, last one bought 2 years ago, only lasted 14000 miles. Hmmm. Got a better one this time I hope. Cheaper, mind - only £12-50 ;^)
At least it failed only 3 miles from home rather than somewhere near Stratford! A lucky escape methinks.

You do know spilled clutch fluid is easier to ignite than spilled petrol, don't you? I almost lost the 390SE one night when I was topping up the reservoir (seals had gone) and spilled some on the hot manifold: instant sheet of flame.If your small bottle got dislodged and melted on the manifold you'd be needing more than a 7/16" spanner to get you home...

Things getting dislodged in the engine bay? I don't think so - found a screwdriver in the bonnet "valley" on Sunday that must have been there 2 years. Plus a big jubilee clip today - just under the brake master on the ledge - result!

I change mine every year (fluid that is) and I think the last time I changed the master cylinder was 5+ years ago, and IIRC it cost about £65. One thing I do make sure of is that the pushrod is wound to its shortest setting, to avoid stressing it too much as the standard alignment is not great, and ultimately can bend the rod and / or wear the cylinder oval.

You have big heavy feet that why you bend clutch rods and a heavier right foot lol
I was ordering cameras to replace a broken one on an iphone I was repairing, and it took the third attempt. The second one actually arrived as the big more expensive camera so I thought f*ck it, your mistake, and put it straight back on the flea and made a profit!
The clutch seller got back in touch first thing this morning so hopefully I'll get it on Saturday. If it works well I'll buy another straight away so I have one "in stock", at this price it'll be mad not to.
