Ok need help here.

New rotor arm, dizzy cap, leads, plugs, coil, ignition amplifier.

Car was running ok? Suddenly dies, call out green flag.
Guy looks at it, I had the bible in the boot, so we made sure all the leads where in order, by taking em out and starting again.
Hooray it fires up great, he comments on how sweet it is, two mins later, does again, just popping and banging, I noticed the the wires to the coil could be better.. He puts all new spades on all nice and tight, hooray sweet as a nut!
..........you guessed it, for about two mins.. Starts popping and stalling, the guy was scratching his head saying he cannot undetstabd what it could be! Got towed home!

He did say ask about on forums, and say, when it's popping it coming out through the air filter!
Any ideas guys?

I came across a few threads like this

They ended up being dodgy earth straps or the immobilzer was cream crackered causing the cut out

This may not be yours but thought I'd share :-)

Hi mate, thanks for the response, but it's not dead completely, it runs but like the timing is a million miles out.
I'm guessing immobiliser would stop it starting at all!?

I didn't check em but do regular, and they are always bone dry, but will have another look, the strange thing is, the two things we played with, the Dizzy and the coil, straight after it ran perfectly, it was ticking over spot on, then all by it's self started popping and banging and then stalling.
The only good I took out of it was seeing someone more trained than me, (which isn't hard) look as bemused!)

Possibly coil breaking down as it gets warm - just because a part is new doesn't mean it's any good! Try putting the old one back on. Failing that, try swapping all the new parts back to old but do it one by one to limit the number of variables.

Do you have a good spark when the fault occurs?

Yes I would put all the old parts back on one by one and go for a run each time - not too far from home to start with. And also check the earths and other connections as suggested.

Keep all the old and new parts in the boot they are all easy to swap at the roadside. OK the leads are a pain but still not too bad.

Once this little lot has been eliminated, if the popping is coming through the air filter this could be front-firing. I have experienced this in the past with a cam lobe wearing out on one exhaust port, so the engine runs OK until you push it.

To diagnose this, pull each injector connector off one at a time and go for another run each time. If the popping disappears then it's not conclusive, but pointing that way.

I had something similar. Mine would run for 15 minutes then a smooth cutout, obviously ignition.

Turned out to be the fuse holder for the coil LT circuit . The fuse was loose and arcing.

Ended up cutting the fuse holder out and fitting a new one.

Try running a 12v supply from the battery to the coil when it happens next (disconnect existing one first).

Had sort of something similar, problem was the dreaded coolant temperature sensor for the ECU.
Disconnect, shortcut the contacts of the connecting wire and have a test.
If it runs fine when warm..... a new sensor will do.

Thanks guys... I've had a tinker tonight, put some old bits that I still have still no different, it's doing it from cold now though, think it may have to go to x works, I have to say it does feel like something is just not quite concerned right someware, especially as the mechanic got it running sweet twice, and it just dropped all by it's self.

Sooooo frustrating, it was booked in for front end respray this week, while I'm away for two weeks.
Was gonna be coming home to a lovely condition wedge.
Now can't even get it to him!!

I'm just not meant to have this car looking good , last year the same time it was dropped off at body shop and he decided he didn't know TVRs well enough.

Feeling reAlly grumpy!

You're in a better place if it does it from cold - find one of HJ2's lists and start working through it...

Sounds like a fuel issue...You could unplug the king lead and crank it for a few seconds then whip out each plug to see if they are ALL wet...Is the timing ok?...Ziga

Just checked plugs are dry, but richer than before black and sooty
But I guess if it's not been running right, that would normal?

The mechanic said the timing must be right because of how sweet it was running, it could go out that much in its on, just like that! His words... But the symptoms are like timing being a million miles out.

Checking for fuel pressure is easy you just have to crack open the feed line jubilee clip a little bit and it will start peeing out.

Ah right, sort of un tighten the clip and if it starts to seep, the pressure is good?

Im sure if you undo it when its not cranked or running then you will get the dregs but if you do it when cranked or running then it will come out at high pressure..Not advisable though...At least not on your own and especially not without a fire extinguisher handy!!!...

It could be a fuel pump...When mine was on its way out the pressure was all over the place...As i have an adjustable FPR with a gauge i could see a fluctuation of 10psi higher and lower..The car would pop and bang on acceleration and would sometimes stall at idle...Check the connections on the pump first before you go undoing any clips..There is a danger that if you undo one that hasn't been touched for ages that it might not do up again.

I must say that when the timing was totally out on Delilah then it did pop and bang in the air intake but wouldn't start...If yours is starting and dies at idle then it could be fuel starvation...Does it start hunting or running rough before it stalls?.....Ziga
