Rear bleed nipple seems to be waggling about when cracked. Seems to nip up ok but not a good fit when loosened. Anybody tell me if this could be the reason for all the problems I have been having with air in the braking system. To be fair mind the problems only started after the ap 4 pots were fitted. Just bled them again after a spirited drive yesterday.

Could be!

Take it all off and put the old stuff back on.

Its not really fast enough to warrant them big brakes anyway, and Rob told me you drive it like a girl!!

wink

Stu

Seriously though, a couple of turns of PTFE on the nipple may help, although if it was causing a problem you would probably see some nipple leakage!!

Jeff, the rear one as in the inboard diff one? As for any bleed nipple with lots of wiggle when backed off then I would change the nipple, hopefully the male thread is worn and the female on the caliper OK. The faces can become worn as well and this could be the reason for your air leak, also take the old one to a supplier as they differ in terms of the V contact area,
Cheers
Hamish

ETA Seen the pics of your calipers above might still apply but also double check the pipe/hose connections especially the flared connections, when putting the body back on mine and after refitting the clutch connection it weeped very slightly and I found the flared end was very slightly deformed.

Stop playing with ya nipples Dix...It could be a source of the problem but like Stu say's you would see some evidence of "Seepage"...hurl...Sorry that word always does it!...So its worth checking...I said "Checking" not "Chicken"...

I never had this problem with my 4-pot conversion...Admittedly they were a so and so to bleed but once done they were fine for well over a year and still are i should imagine...Ziga

PTFE tape is for sealing and lubricating tapered threads.

Brake bleed screws seal with the conical end of the nipple and have parallel threads.

If a bleed screw does not seal under normal tightening torque then there is a fault with the seating or the screw cone.

The faulty part should be replaced, all PTFE tape will do is lubricate the threads as it is not in contact with the sealing faces.

Could this be a metric vs imperial issue, I know the threads are similar in size.

If it's OK when tight then it won't be letting air in, but if it wiggles for bleeding then air can get in up the thread which isn't ideal.

I would just replace it they are cheap enough.

Just read this and an idea occurs.....

Is it the original nipple ?

Because I do know that bleed nipples come with both straight and tapered threads - the idea being that tapered thread seals itself (from plumbing and so on), but I think that car brake calipers had straight threads ??

Could be wrong, but would fit the symptoms.....
