Auto windscreens for Wedge glass....
Discussion
Hi Peeps...I have been on the phone to my insurance company and they will only give me £50 if i use a private fitter..Im a bit skint to be fair and shelling out nearly £500 for a screen is a bit too much...I have looked on the Autowindscreen site and they use OEM or as close as..If they make a pigs ear of it or I'm unhappy in any way then I'm covered by the insurance and they will be obliged to sort it out FOC...Using this option i only have to pay the £75 excess....My question is...Has anybody used these people before...I don't want any naming or shaming just honest opinions please...Cheers...Ziga
Hi zig
Not sure if you remember but the screen on my 350 went about a month after I got it. Replaced through the insurance, auto glass came round to the house and did a fantastic job. No issues with the replacement screen or quality of workmanship. As I remember I had a choice of plain glass, green tint at top of screen or blue tint at top. Welcome to have a look if you want mark. I'll try to get over to a sausage meet on the weekend or you could nip over - I'm on me hols at the mo. I could mail Pics if you need them.
Cheers fella

I watched Paul the Glassman change the screen on mine, and to tell you the truth it's not much different to any other car with a bonded screen. I see no reason why these other glass fitters should have a problem. If it's cheaper and more convenient, I'd go for it.
PS. To be fair though, Paul did fit a genuine Pilkington glass on mine.

Hi Tony...This was a concern initially but i have been put at ease knowing that they can supply Pilkington glass and with the correct tint and blue..(Not black as first thought) sun strip..They are going to assess the work tomorrow and make sure they have the correct trim.It also gives me a chance to stick the vinyl back down at the top corners of the dash..And silicone in the demister vents properly...
The glass on my car was done by autoglass (receipt in history)
Several years ago, still holding up fine.
The thing with having the work done through insurance is that they can guarantee a good job. Whereas getting money back from a private company who hashed up the job can be tricky if you're going alone.

Thanks for the info chaps...It seems that Auto-glass are the kiddies...I had a call from Auto-Windscreens this morning who were asking for my nearest TVR supplier as they couldn't find the glass...
so i won't be using them, They also said that Auto-glass use the same suppliers and won't have it either...Guess what i phoned Auto-glass and they have it, They do need to get it to their local branch as its a branch job?..Now do i risk driving it in the meantime?..Or will i get nicked?..Do i phone local authority or an MOT station to find out?...Cheers...Ziga

Same happened with me zig - auto glass had it on the shelf ( at another depot - so 2 day wait to get it transferred over) The reason they like to have it in the workshop is that due to the TVR fibreglass moulding of the windscreen frame they can vary quite a bit so they like to do it in the workshop where the access to tools, equipment etc is better than if they do it on the roadside so they don't get caught out. Saying that they did mine on the drive with no issues

Actually not strictly true.
A 'good and honest' independent like Paul has more than enough liability insurance to cover any mishaps.
Trying to get insurance out of big companies can be a serious and painful experience.
Good indi's have their reputation to speak for them and we should support them whenever possible.
Paul is a member of an association who can recommend members across the country that can be relied upon.
I have no connection with Paul's business other than a very satisfied customer having had work done on both TVR & De Tomaso.

I too can vouch for Paul. He did an excellent job on my then 400SE. He was friendly, worked hard, fitted the best screen with enthusiasm ,and achieved an excellent result. You may be able to find cheaper, and the outcome may be satisfactory, but if you compare like with like, Paul's is value for money with a personal service and I'm sure he has all the safety fallbacks in place.

Paul and David sound really nice chaps and obviously know their stuff but Paul is away on holiday for two weeks so i have gone for the cheaper option...Im just waiting for Auto-Glass to locate a screen of exact tint and get it to their local branch...Its a branch job and not an at your door fix...Should be a couple of days....Cheers...Ziga
ziga, It is legal providing the crack does not obscure the view of the road. But it's subject to interpretation by the police officer.
If it's not obscuring the view of the road, you can go to the MOT tester and ask for a letter / statement saying if it would / wouldn't pass an MOT. Then you have something in your hands for the police!

Thanks for that mate...I have already paid the excess and just waiting for the glass to be delivered to my local branch..Its not really obscuring only if you look up but then why would you do that?..The crack is not in view when looking ahead...Im only worried about it getting worst while I'm driving it...I have driven it but left the roof up so the flexing was minimised on the screen...And i was very careful when putting the window up..I need to use it tomorrow so hopefully when i uncover her in the morning the crack hasn't got any worse....Cheers...ZigaIf it's not obscuring the view of the road, you can go to the MOT tester and ask for a letter / statement saying if it would / wouldn't pass an MOT. Zig, I recently had mine done by autoglass in Croydon , 70quid excess on the insurance however lord alone knows what they charge the insurance company , guess I will see if they allow me to renew next year. I am totally happy with the job. If I had caught this earlier I would have said come have a look as the car is only up the road from you in SE25.
Hi Daryl...I asked about the effect it will have on my insurance and they assured me its not classed as an actual claim...Its classed as cover..They also said it won't mess with my NCB or push the premium up...
Has yours got the flat trim around it or is it just siliconed in?...Cheers...Ziga

Zig , I will check in the morning as I plan to drive into work tomorrow early. I replaced that heater hose earlier this evening and all working grand. Incidentally I think I have uncovered a right v8 wizard here in se25 , he's got my land rover as it was not running great ( seemed to be missing/hesitant and down on power) , I pick it up tomorrow and he swears it's purring. He has a late 3.9 classic range rover ( lovely thing I have to say) which I pass in the mornings and it sounds splendid , he loves the rover v8s apparently. But yeah will give a full field report if he's a good as I think.
