Early Tasmin Mirror Conversion
Discussion
Looking at converting the current door mirrors (which on a tasmin 200 are not electric) to the later pod style that mount in the corner of the doors. Looking at getting the mouldings from TET and then source the mirrors, motors etc from an SD1. Just wondered if anyone had already done this and if there are any reasons why it can't shouldn't be done.
Hi Steve,
I did this swap on a Tasmin DHC that I had many many years ago, the only snag I had was I was supplied a LHD mirror for the near side, so I could never adjust the mirror so that it was usable. But a very easy mod that gives a much nicer finish (IMHO).
Merry Christmas to all
Chris.

Derek, thanks for the idea but I had really decided that I wanted to fit the later pod style.
Chris, thanks for the info. I did think it should be possible but good to get it confirmed. Not seen you at any of the meets recently hope you are well.
So the next question....does anyone know a source for SD1 electic mirrors?

any progress on this, im interested in fitting them with either manual or electric mirrors..
p.s. i have one pod if you want to play, its empty though

Graham, no progress I'm afraid. It's a question of finding the bits and I haven't had time to do this. I think it's possible to buy the parts new from Rimmer's but the price is going to be around the £300 mark. Don't really want to pay that much so it's a question of finding an SD1 that's being scrapped. It's on the list of things to do but not at the top at the moment, need to sort a couple of oil leaks, heat shields, air plenum etc.
I have now sourced all the parts to do this conversion. Pods from TET, motors, mirror glass, and switches.
Does anyone know how the later wedges mounted the pod to the triangular metal piece? I was told that they were bolted to the top of the doors, but this does not seem to be correct as all the cars I have looked at have a visable gap here. I am sure I could find a way of doing this but I would prefer to do it the standard way, then if I ever need to replace the pod it should just bolt straight on.
PS the pods from TET don't have any mounting holes in them, so no clues there.
Thanks.

Mine simply have 2 bolts through the triangle piece into the end on the pod. The holes are drilled through the metal triangle and are countersunk, and then 2 countersunk headed bolts are glued in place so they dont move when you do the nut up on the other end. Mine were totally rusty and I had to drill them out, so use stainless bolts if I was you.
Thanks for the info. Spent yesterday doing the work and the mirror pods are on, just got to send them away for spraying. The wires are already run into the doors, so that's saved some work. I've just got to find the other end in the car.
One question..... does anyone know what the mirror glass is from? I thought it was Rover SD1, but the mirrors I bought to take the parts from would suggest otherwise, as the glass for the SD1 is about an inch longer than the pod apature.

The mirror glass looks like that used on Minis and MGBs. Available on Halfords. I've been looking to replace mine with the ones incorperating the convex edge (for blind spot elimination) but not found a source.

) they could just be bolted through the 'triangle' with the fixings hidden by the interior trim panel.
