Power steering rack refurb recommendations, Yorkshire
Discussion
Morning boys and girls,
Although my Wedge is still being driven regularly until the weather gets too cold and wet thoughts have turned to the power steering rack I have had in the garage for a year or two...
I need to 1st remove the manual rack then do a trial fit make sure that the bits I have will fit, once I'm happy with that I can get the rack refurbished... Searching the forum throws up one candidate in Bristol, but that's a long way from South Yorkshire.
Another question for the rest of you wedgers...
I have the pump, bracket and hoses which came with the rack, is there any advantage in dumping this and installing an electric pump, if so what donor vehicle is recommended?

Hi mate..I had an electric PAS pump fitted when i was having the supercharger fitted to my 280i...I think it came from a Citroen saxo 106..It needed a new live feed as the power consumption was quite large, I also needed another larger capacity alternator (WOSP 180amp) and some 50amp inline fuses...TBH i didn't feel any difference between that and the original mechanical PAS pump...It was done purely because of lack of space for the blower..Cheers...Ziga
Hi Brian...If you need any refurbing of rack or pump then there are these guys, They have branches everywhere, One in Bristol and another in Bath...I have used them twice in the past and have recommended them to other people who say they are good as well...
Do you know what PAS rack you have...Cortina mk4-5 or the "Supra" TVR rack?...I think the Cortina one might need a bit of fettling to as regards to the connecting shaft.
Hope this helps...Cheers...Ziga

Hi Brian
I've done the same install you are planning earlier this year. I couldn't find a belt driven pump and mount so went with the electronic one I got with the rack. No alternator upgrade and works perfectly.
I had the rack refurbed by Kiley Clinton in Birmingham. Brilliant service and they supply world wide so postage too and from Yorkshire is no problem.
They also had a few fully refurbed racks on the self ready to go. I put a post on about them at the time.
If you need any info about the install email me and I'll give you my number.
Apparently my pump is off a Citroen VTR but was also fitted to some Jags!
ATB Karl.
