Well today was going well until the Gredge started miss firing when I went to get fuel. So filled up and the car started fine then a mile down the road the miss fire returned. By the time I got home it was getting worse so got onto the drive and it died. So after some initial diagnostics it turned out to be the distributor. The bob wieght spring had come off completely. So long story short, and a quick removal and dismantling this is the reason:

So the question is, in order to re fit the bob wieghts and their springs I assume I will have to remove the central shaft and gear and seals etc to gain access to the posts for the springs then refit from the top? Anyone done one? Any tips and tricks before I attempt it? I am going to take the oportunity to do the vacuum assembly while its on the bench yes

Chris - I've been running a Mallory Unilite for the past few years - highly recommended if you fancy something different.

Chris,

Don't forget, the weights, as they are, are unique to the TVR RV8, creating their 'own' dwell angle, so don't go change them !

Can be of no help.

Lucky to get back home before it cut out 'for good'.

Clearly too much electricity in the system wink

I don't think you have to dismantle any more than you already have, the ends of the springs fit over the pegs and sit in the grooves at the top of the pegs.

Although in your photos I can't see the pegs on the weights that are there on mine (1985 flapper) so it may be different for yours.

Yep it was changed about 3 weeks ago for a proper Lucus one but I was careful not to dislodge the wieghts as I know from experience if they are too tight you can pull them off!! yes

Thanks all... Update thanks to Paul spotted a ex Griff 500 dizzy on fleabay so after winning it for a very reasonable £30 it has arrived and seems in very good nick. All being well I will check it over and fit it this evening and re-time the car. yes

The old dizzy seems to have failed due to one spring breaking so will dig through the parts box as I may have another one somewhere. Refitting the springs and Bob weights will be challenge as the bottom plate with the spring posts on seems to be pressed over the central shaft as seen in the pics. I will see if I can pull it off the shaft in order to refit the springs and weights under the top cover and reassemble as a spare.

If anyone has done this on a Griff type dizzy any tips and tricks would be appreciated yes

If you are thinking one day of megasquirt/jolt you could leave the weights off and get the box to do the advance electronically.

I have already fitted a MS trigger wheel and sensor bracket should I wish to go down that route on the serpentine engine.

Update ........ dizzy in the car, and is running smoothly. After setting the timing, I will do a proper test driving tomorrow yes
