.

Hi - I require 2 x mirror actuators for my 1981 280i. Please see the picture attached. They're made by IKU. However I'm struggling to find suitable replacements. Any ideas anyone? I also require the electric mirror toggle switch too. Thank you. Nathan.

They look like mine of my 350i which are rover sd1 units I can check for you if thats the case. Have you tried rimmers? Assume they dont work. I might have a couple of spares but again will look for you.

Hi Jon. Yes tried Rimmers. They don't have anything available. Thanks for looking, much appreciated.

If you have the fared-in pods, they are standard 80's used on all kinds of Euro cars. (IIRC - BMW, Volvo, etc.) I replaced mine with a set of 3 series BMW motors. Fit right in except for the glass and the backing plate which I transferred over.

I suspect the same is true for the arm type. The guts look the same. Grady

A local glass shop made me a mirror glass, only need a template, they put the adhesive on the back too.

My bro had a 9000 in the early 90s and when I got the 390 he sat in it and said the mirror joystick looked like the one in his SAAB.
So when I accidentally pulled the wires off the back of the switch I borrowed his 9000 Haynes manual and found that the wire colours were the same as the TVR. Once I'd drawn the circuit diagram from the 390 it was obviously the same as the SAAB and it didn't take much hunting to find pics of the SAAB actuator and match it to the TVR's.
The mirror glass is almost certainly from some small car of the early-mid 1980s as it's unlikely TVR would complicate matters by making their own shape. EDIT - actually, thinking about it, most makers were starting to fit decent door mirrors by the early 80s so maybe something from the 1970s...

What's up with them? Mine were seized solid for year's but last year I pulled them apart and managed to free off the motors and lubricate everything and they now work!

Take the back off and it looks like this

They are a little fiddly and the motors only fit one way but once freed off mine were good as new. smile

Thanks guys. Some good tips. I think I might as well try and free my existing ones off as Matt suggested. I'll try taking them apart later. Soak in WD40 Matt? Or do they need more fettling than that?

On mine, the bearings on the motor were seized. I assume because they hardly get used and water gets on them they nuts corrode and freeze. I took the motor out, sprayed the ends of the motor and gently held the motor shaft with a pair of pliers and wiggled it gently clock, then anticlockwise over and over until free. Once free. As zig says, use contact cleaner in the motor if you have it.

When you pull it apart it will go 'twang' and you will think 'well, that ain't going back together again...' But it will!!

When I check the oil/water etc on any of my cars, I always (well, if I remember) to jiggle both electric mirrors and power seats, rear electric windows and sunroof if fitted. Every time I changed the oil, I used the hi/lo transfer box on 4x4s.

Keeps everything free and easy...........
