Hi Guys

Me again and still struggling with the room to get the rear 16's put on frown

The tyre walls are only about 2mm away from the tie bars and then the wheel itself not much more than that from the bolt nearby !!

With 6mm spacers they fit and sit perfectly and I would be much happier with them fitted on that basis.

What I therefore want to do is increase my wheel stud length by 6mm and then all will be good as without that the wheel nuts only go on a few turns and under shall we say spirited driving may well undo and as you can imagine that's not something I want to risk !

Has anyone here had any lengthened studs made or got any ideas as the sun us shining and I want it back on the road as soon as possible !!!

Look forward to your thoughts

Thanks all

Ty

My first reaction Ty when reading your post is - why do you need 6mm spacers? From your description, 2mm will easily be enough.

You can quite easily make your own with some nice flat 2mm aly sheet, some tinsnips and drill the 5 stud holes. Aly sheet from a metal supplier will easily be flat enough that the wheels will still be true.

If you only use 2mm spacers then there will be plenty of stud and there won't be any issues with them flexing. Also there's less chance of the outer wall rubbing - which you won't find out till you drive over a bumpy road with a passenger.

You're obviously going to get more movement in the tyre wall compared to the wheel (unless the bearings / ujs are shot) so I wouldn't worry about the latter. Different tie bars will cure it - the SH type have an offset which adds a good amount to the clearance.

Yeah but - you'll only get movement where the tyre is touching the road. The tie bar is a full 270 degrees rotation away from this so it's hardly likely to be deformed (and in my experience with only 1-2mm clearance there's never a problem anyway).

I changed the studs on my hubs to accomodate 17 inch wheels. Took about 3 hours for all four and a simple job so long as you have a suitable press to locate the new studs. I run with spacers and its made no difference in the handling of the car at all.

Thanks Guys

Andy where did you get your new studs from ?

I understand demon tweeks do a stud extension kit so may look at this

I have the car in with hexham and they are the ones really doing the work and I am happy to take their advice on having more than a 2mm gap and I know I could leave it but would hate the thought of rubbing when im driving like a silly bugger !!

Yep
Same bloody place and same monthly meeting !!

I remember when roger was looking for £35000 for his red sag and I just couldn't afford it !

Wish I had now it would've been an investment !

They are a ford stud and you can get them off ebay easily.
M12x1.5 with a 13.1 spline. You can find them in various lenghts, I cut some down to the length i needed.

Easiest way is with a big vice to press them in and out.

Good luck. Andy

Ty you probably only want to take the hub off the driveshaft spline and avoid disturbing the wheel bearings as much as possible. They will last longer. You could put a bit of grease in there if they can take it.
