Well... A momentous day.
After falling for the angled, stilton looks about 10 years ago, I finally own myself an early 84 Tasmin 350i. Collected the car on a trailer today (400 miles round trip in the faithful Mondeo) from someone who has clearly loved it and spent time on it. Despite this, some re-commisioning needs to be done, but I hope to have the car on the road in the next few weeks! The car suffers from poor cold starting and it wasn't great from Hot either... I know the '5th' injector can be a bh but any other majors?

I thought I'd introduce myself, you'll be hearing a lot from me now Im sure, and I hope to make an appearance at BBWF with a grin ear to ear.

Welcome to the forum. Got any photos of her yet? Being a comparatively new Wedge owner myself (18 months), you wont find a more helpful and knowledgeable bunch of enthusiasts. Look forward to seeing at the BBWF. Cheers. Keith

Was waiting for the Spandau jokes.... maybe I should call it Tony.

Its a great basis for a rolling resto, just a bit tatty round the edges! Rumour has it from the previous owner, it was at a motor show in its early days, and Compmotive who supply the alloys asked to put a sticker in the window to show them off. Nothing to back this up but the sticker is there! Nice story anyway!

Hi mate...Funnily enough if they are a pig to start when cold then thats normal..Mine used to start within about 4 seconds from cold but yet have a mis-fire..After much investigation i found this on the temperature sensor...

The wires were intwined together causing the ECU to short and constantly over fuel... Now she takes around 10-15 seconds to start and is a bit lumpy until the automatic choke kicks in...Once warmed up she is as smooth as a bowl of angel delight and goes like a race horse with a sharp stick up its arsh...

If you are systematic then you will find the issues....You need to test the resistance of things like the temperature sensor...The thermotime switch..Clean all the contacts and plug connectors with some electrical lube..Like the AFM plug..Ballast resistor plug...ECU plug..An emery board that ladies use for their nails is a good aid for cleaning the pins on the connections of the AFM & ECU...You don't have to go too mad.

Check earths and connections....

The worst thing you can do is start changing everything randomly...Its just extra expense that doesn't always solve the issues...

One of my problems were the coil lead..The coil in its original application is mounted on the plenum but in our cars they are on the inner O/S wing so the standard coil lead is never long enough, This causes people to leave the old one on there which again is bad practice.
First things to replace..Dependant on how long they have been on the car would be coil..Good set of leads and appropriate length of coil lead...Rotor arm..Plugs if needed..Regularly clean the dizzy cap as they can suffer from moisture build up...Check fuses and relays...And then check all the hoses around the plenum to make sure there are no split or loose hoses...

Its also good practice if you replace these parts one at a time and test the car when fault finding..I generally replace them whenever i buy a new/Old car as part of a yearly maintenance regime..Don't automatically assume its a problem with the ECU..Or TPS as most of the time its the simple stuff that gets over looked.

Not saying that you don't get issues with them cos you do but thats why its good to test stuff...Im sure we will have you up and running in time for the BBWF...smile
Cheers...Ziga

Mrzigaziga, thanks!

yep, it will just be a case of process of elimination. I need to retrieve my multimeter to get some decent readings then Il get started. The car has a set of magnecor plug leads, but I didn't notice if this included the coil lead. For the moment I have had to take the car to a friends whilst the garage roof is being put on, so hopefully I can go and up and take some pictures of the car for all to see.

I think I spotted you coming off the A1 south near Worksop, also spotted a white wedge with numbers on the door on the back of a trailer heading North on the A1 near Ferrybridge, 2 wedges in a day.

Indeed you did spot us there! We shouldn't have been there, bloody sat nav. The poor car hasn't seen rain for about 5 years and it got a bashing yesterday, still its highlighted the door seals need attention!

.....and, once it's all sorted and running well, if you need aditional performance, MrZigazaga may be able to sort you out with a proven and tested blower and instalation details. It's a long story. biggrin

Following! So glad to see it in some hand who has the time to put into it, though as said, gutted I didnt buy it myself! it has had some serious money spent on it in the past with a number of goodies added. get t running and get it set up by someone who knows what theyre doing, all the heads and cams have had work so it should be fairly quick. not that you really care with that exhaust note!

Welcome to Wedgedom.

Owning a wedge is everything from glorious to exhillerating to frustrating to pants-stting when traction breaks and the car wants to go sideways.

Enjoy your new ride, keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down. smile

Enjoy - I was truly gutted to see her go and was sadly working away on Tuesday so didn't get the chance to say hello.

The car was a great member of our family since 2006. We had some great summers with it and I took her on some long jaunts over the years. The most memorable was a car weekend with friends to Malvern when the place flash flooded and we all had to camp down in a barn somewhere. The water was so bad the distributor cap filled with water but the old lady soldered on and did me proud. The car got me into trouble at Triumph tr events regularly for being to brash and noisy!!

I fully intended to get her back on the road this year and completed some small jobs. The interior wiring was scotch lock heaven and i spent a few weekends chopping it all out and repairing properly. I also upgraded the interior bulbs. The handbrake switch is brand new and just needs setting up.

The car was always a bad starter from cold so I will Watch with interest to see if you can solve this.

I was really gutted Tuesday knowing she jo longer graced the garage but I'm thrilled she is in enthusiasts hands and look forward to following the next chapter in her life.

Enjoy. The noise, I will badly miss the noise smile
