Steering Rack help
Discussion
Hi Guys
I know this has probably been done to death but I need your help. 1989 350i S2. Steering rack has been weeping for a few years now somewhere round the input shaft, although after a clean and a good look cannot see anything obvious. Its now leaking badly and leaving oil on my drive. Yesterday removed the rack, the hard way. Thought it would come out and slip through between roll bar and droplink with pipes still on (its power steering ), it doesn't. 3 1/2 hours later it was on floor. Identified it by pics on here and its a supra/tvr one. Now, is there a non power steering rack I can just bolt straight on or do I have to get this one refurbed. If refurb any recommendations and possible prices.
Thanks guys

Hi mate...The best route would be to get yours refurbed...Especially now as its out...Get some new track rod ends as well...Prices do vary but should be around the 250 barrier...Or less...But any more and they are pulling your trousers down.
I have used these people in the south east and have recommended them to others who seemed very happy also...There are a few branches in Wales...Unless someone can recommend someone else...

For what it's worth I had the same problem with mine. I opted to convert to manual steering. It's a Mk 3/4/5/ Ford Cortina steering rack which is available for about £100. The only problem is that the shaft that connects the steering column to the rack is shorter on the PAS version, so if you do the conversion you will need a longer shaft.
If you want to go this route, message me and I'll measure my shaft (fnaar fnaar) .... I believe that Rimmer Bros may have them for about £30. Alternatively, do what I did and get the shaft off any manual steering wedge that's being broken.

Try these guys mate. They helped me convert my none PAS to PAS last year for a very reasonable price. If you search my previous posts you will find the details.
If all else fails I think I still have a full none PAS setup in the shed. But to be fair I wouldn't go down that route! My car has been transformed since the upgrade.
