Just took the 1985 350i for its mot and it failed with play in the nearside drive shaft, whether this is the UJ itself or the bush I do not know yet, also the handbrake was only operating on one rear wheel,I asked the Mot garage if they could give me a price to fix it, but they are unsure as they dont know how much time it will take and were they could source the parts, anyone khow how long it should take to replace the bush on top of the drive shaft and were we can get a new one from, better still does anyone know any fanatics in the Blackpool area who work on these, as I dont think the Mot garage is up to it.

Hi, I recently had to source some spare parts for my MoT on the wedge.
I found Neil at ML Performance based down in Dorset extremely helpful - 07971 826143, getting me driveshaft UJs, headlight pod motor, track control arms and track rod ends. He is on holiday 'till the 21st June I think
but give him a call
Cheers,
Tim

.. called him today
Sorry to hear about the MOT...Is it the inner or outer rear UJ?..Also what bush are you asking after?...Get the best ones you can and make sure they have grease nipples..(Ooo missus) on them.
All parts are obtainable...Well nearly all but finding someone who knows what they are doing and who won't rip your arms and legs off and beat you with them is another story..Hope you get it sorted.
You could try..
RT racing...ML Performance..
There are some part numbers in the "Wedge parts list"..Not sure if these are still the right part number?...

I've just had the UJ's replaced on mine. The 350 has the slightly smaller UJ's compared with the 400. Mine is a 400 so I was given the HS179. Yours will be the next one down which I believe is the HS166 but do double check with the supplier. Best to change both on one side.

I have no idea if this outfit is any good, because I just googled them, but as you are in Blackpool the spiritual home of TVR the chances are quite good:

You could try the new TVR website too, to see if they or any one else is in the "TVR Network" - for TVR service specialists.

Thanks everyone so far for your help, the Mot garage never called me back with a price for supply and fit, the car is still there so I will call tomorrow and ask them to put it on the ramp to show me the play it failed on to give me more idea what we are looking for, they said they could not give me a price for Labour as it did not list the car in some garage book they refer to which lists expected times do the job. Anyone who has had the work done tell me roughly how many hours the job takes to remove the drive shaft and remove and fit new UJs, so that I have some idea.
I cannot believe they have gone has you would think you would get a clunking, although he did say it was a bush, I have owned the car for 26 years and have always drove it with care, the last 10 years have done little mileage, at most 300 miles a year, last year I had all the callipers reconditions with new piston and seal and pads, yet the handbrake is only working on one wheel now, so dont know what that is, but will take it back to the garage in Poulton who did the work.
The car just has 50,000 on it now, I think with lack of use, as it is a pain to get it out of my garage were I keep it covered up, might sell it this year to someone who is going to get more use out of it than I do at the moment. I have one of the new Xjs so in my old age, I prefer the comfort these days. Be different if I had a double garage I suppose and it was easy to get at.

Like I said earlier I've just had the UJ's replaced on one side. Originally I had considered a local garage to do the job but then I realised they didn't know what they were talking about, so I told them to leave it well alone and took it to a TVR specialist. Local garages can't get the parts for this car, neither do they have a clue how to go about fixing it, yet they think they know it all. I won't name and shame on this forum but I'm glad I took it to a specialist where the job was done properly. Each side takes about four to five hours in a place where they are familiar with these cars.

I have never used them, but a serial TVR owner in york that I know takes his car across there for any work doing which is a reasonable recommendationhttp://www.backhomeperformance.com/
