Strutting me struts...
Discussion
Thanks chaps...Andy unfortunately they were adjustable which meant letting gas to until they felt sufficient..I compared them against an old pair that were good..I set them to just a bit more...I was fairly methodical in letting out and counting each time so that i could adjust the second one...I then pushed down on each at the same time and both felt close..Bit of a guessing game but they are holding up nicely...I think the originals were somewhere between 100-150nm??...I know the bonnet struts on Delilah were the same as the Capri tailgate struts...Thats why they had a little spade connector on...For the Capri heated rear screen...TVR utilised it as an earth.......Cheers...Ziga
Didn't think it made any difference to which way they go up or down?...I just put like for like, The old ones were that way up....They don't catch anywhere on the bonnet or wing?...If need be though i will turn them up the other way...Its certainly easier to push the thinner end in and fix on than the fatter one...
I did hear someone saying that the struts 'dry out' with the fat bits (and fluid/gas whatever) on the bottom, and seals start to leak, but I can't see the sense in that - these things are pressurised units.... eerrr..
Good to get some numbers - here in NZ at equivalent of Halfrauds (= Repco - Aussie I think) they have a 'universal' range of various lengths and forces, which is why I asked...

Ah but is the bonnet being pushed away by the car or is the bonnet pushing the car away?....
.....
Length of strut from top of push fit bonnet to top of push fit wing bracket = 52cm....They are a "Vari-lift" type and are made here in sunny old blighty...No part number on it though.

Doesn't say much about direction of fitting but it does say temperature affects the gas and can cause leaks...Time will tell under a TVR Wedge bonnet...Especially the 350i which has no vents whatsoever!....
They took me about 5 mins to let out enough gas with the provided allen key and about 10 mins to fit..Overall first impression 10/10...Very happy...

To make things easear for compressing, when fitting the struts. Take your belt off your trouser waist and compress them fully and retain them fully compressed by using the belt. Then, fit one side of the strut and then release the belt slowly to the required opening to fit the other side. This saves the muscles in your arm and back, but be carefull your trousers don't drop to the floor without a belt on your waist. Especially if working in the street.

I have fitted a lot of gas struts, in many applications through the years and yes they always go rod down. look very nice, are you going to put the other set that didn't sell at BBWF on the boot?

Mark, unless i am mistaken i think they should be the other way up with the cylinder at the top.
Not sure why though!
Zig, are they Australian struts ? Not sure why though!

Bit worried now mine are the same way as mr zig.
I wouldnt worry..If the fat bit is as mine is then at least if they do leak then it won't be pishing downwards ...Just weeping upwards...One thing i have noticed with the stainless steel type is that they do get quite hot under there and heat is one of the struts biggest enemies...Doh!!!...See how long they last cooking upside down...

Had mine on for a while now (same type) and no problems with heat etc, in fact I doubt they actually get any hotter than the black ones in reality, mind you mine are the right way up.
