400SE wheels refurb
Discussion
Hi all, I was thinking of having a go a referbishing the alloys on the 400SE as a little winter project.
I was thinking of painting the centres, and polishing the rims.
I'm aware the "split rim" (?) studs are in the way to complete this job properly, hence a couple of questions?
Are the wheels really split rim or are these studs just decorative dummies?
Should I break a few are they still available or is there a similar alternative?

Hi mate...The OZ rims are split, You will need the tool to remove the bolts, The bolts are available but are not cheap...And there is a gasket between the rims...People have refurbed them and replaced the bolts but not sure if they actually split them or not?...
Here are a few posts as regards to this....

Hi ,
as Mark says above You need to get hold of the two special sockets to undo the nuts and bolts ( I got mine from Laser tools ). My rims were sealed with silcon rather than a gasket and cost over £500 to have professionally refurbed , Polished rims and centre powercoated black. I purchased the replacement chrome bolts and stainless ( normal 6 sided flanged nuts ) myself from ebay for another £150 ish.
You will save a load doing it yourself.... Have fun.
Cheers
Geoff.

I re-furbed my wheels, I can’t see how you could possibly polish up the rims without removing the bolts. The bolts are titanium and I couldn’t get a direct replacement for them, at the time. A chap who comes on here, he’s well know – Hans Daal’ sold me set of suitable stainless bolts . Failing that I was in touch with Compomotive wheels who know a thing of two about such things and was on the verge of purchasing these when Hans came back with the goods; it proved at least, that the material of construction was up to the job. The tool for removal, I obtained from I can’t remember where – but it was bloody useless – buggered up completely after removing just a couple of bolts. The rest of the bolts I ground down with a dremel. Yes theres a lot, to cut out! Wet and dry and then a polishing kit from ebay, coarse and fine paste and my old drill – did the rest. Had the hubs vapour blasted, power coated and then the rim and the hub are sealed with a suitable silicone sealant (obtainable from a diy store). Hey presto!
Hi all. Try this link to when I did mine..................
