I was doing a fast start, dropped the clutch and I heard a BANG from the back end, slowed down and the car still seemed to drive ok, stopped looked around pulled the rear wheels around, had a glance underneath it all seemed to be ok. So I just carried on to my destination did what I had to do and drove home. I thought I had better have a closer look as loud bangs tend to mean something is not right, well up close and looking at the rear end of my Wedge I found that the top rear mount for the diff had snapped on one side! So the question is I assume that you have to drop the rear end sub-frame down to get at the top diff mounting that is a pain but not a real problem but can you still buy that mounting anywhere or is welding it acceptable? It is aluminum by the look of it, I have not got it off yet. Has anyone had any experience of this problem? Is it a standard part from another car? I would be grateful for any help/advice at this point.

Done this twice (2 different cars). The beam is aluminium alloy, and later versions had an additional web to give more strength (see pictures). TVR special. Try RT Racing. I've only ever replaced them by dropping the entire diff and cradle assembly. This give you a great opportunity to overhaul the rear brakes, change the diff oil etc. more easily. I wouldn't like to comment on welding. Maybe one of the racers could, as I'm sure they will have experienced this.

Have a look on fleabay, they come up now and again, alternatively think about having a steel one made although this probably just transfers the weakest point to another part, or weld up the existing one and strengthen it and/or finally be less aggressive with ya right foot! Good luck, wooly

I did take a quick look the Bay but could not see one for sale.
Have liberally sprayed all the nuts and bolts with WD and am trying to get the prop shaft bolts to undo, they seem to be a pain to get at and are ****ing tight, two have surrendered but the last two I might have to take a chisel too but there is not much room. Any other suggestions?

Snap On torque gun as one option, they should come undone with spanners, exhaust is off I assume?

Yeah the prop ones can be a bugger, try a bit of heat on the nut end?

Well after much pulling and pushing I managed to get the four prop bolts undone. I have remove the hub nuts and trailing arms from both sides and the hub/wheel carrier and wishbone assembly from the drivers side but the bottom bolts passenger side hub/wheel carrier are proving to be a pain. I will start again all refreshed tomorrow.

I have a new and unused original old stock one of these (the strengthened version) in my shed assuming it survived the house move. Bought two of them at some expense from a liquidating TVR supplier's stock when mine broke on my track car which I subsequently sold. Picture below also shows the custom access point for easy changes but not sure I'd recommend it! You're welcome to it if you have a means of getting it from near Tunbridge Wells.

Hi I have just bought a second hand one, it looks similar to mine but I am still working at getting it off, I have undone all the bolts, pipes and cables so it should come down but the disc brakes are fouling on the the rear of he chassis. possibly one of the front cradle mount bolts is not out far enough so the front of cradle will not drop down, the bolt seems to be hitting the bend in the exhaust pipe. I will have another go in the next few days.
With reference to the "Differential Top Mounting Bracket" that you have can you send me a picture and how much do you want for it, I would like to see it it is different to the one I have and the one still on the car, and yes I can get to Tunbridge Wells as I live in Storrington West Sussex, so I am interested.
Many thanks. Len.

Slightly off topic, but I was reversing my ordinary car out of the garage today, and got a pretty huge "KERBANG" just after moving back, which frightened me sh*tless, the OMG moment that something has broken. It was LOUD.

I spent about 10 minutes looking around until I spotted that the cause (and evidence) was a large odd shaped stone which had been squeezed out under the rear tyre and hit the metal side of the garage. There's actually a DENT in the wall and a stone broken in two !!

Weird.....but true...

Hi Len, sorry for delayed reply. I'll try to get a picture of the bracket today but it is the same as the new one shown in the pictures near the top of the thread. I'm not looking for anything for it - happy to help keep a wedge on the road! Lear

Thanks, I have just managed to drop the axle assembly out from under and can now see the full extent of the damage. It seems that mine was one of the old type without the strengthening web. Now to de-grease everything, remove the seized in bolt that I had to saw off in the hub carrier and see if can get some new metalastic bushes from somewhere. Then all I have to do get it all shot blasted and paint and reassemble!

Wow....Nasty. Everything else looks OK, which is good.

I would suggest it's a good time to refurbish/service the rear brakes, cause it's a real b*stard otherwise.

That as well, it all just adds to the time and cost but that's a Wedge's life.

It's worth doing the UJ's also if they not been done recently. Esp if they are the small ones.

Well have now got everything off the rear end, I have cleaned most of the crap of the wheel bearing carriers so they can have the bearing pushed out. The springs, axle carrier, axle carrier brackets, wishbones and trailing arms are all going to be shot blasted. springs to be powder coated. the wheel bearing carriers to follow as soon as the bearings are out. Now comes the job of tracking down bushes, wheel bearings, bolts, brake pads main and handbrake and possibly uj bearings. Remaking the brake pipes as they look a bit rusty. Cleaning all the rust of the diff will be fun as it looks very bad then servicing the brakes. Not a lot really. Forgot I have sill to clean and repaint the rear of the chassis. Have to get it back on the road for the spring.

If you get stuck just ask...It looks like TVR parts are now stocking the wheel bearings..Reasonably priced too...In fact it may be worth contacting to enquire after all the other bits you need...Failing that RT racing is a good bet for mostly all of it...

Handbrake pads are XJS/XJ6
