Has anyone considered a Toyota 1UZ-FE V8 transplant ?
Discussion
Just wondering - I've seen a few engine swap and kit car websites which say this is a natural successor to Rover V8 ....
Smaller in all 3 dimensions, all ally, same weight as a 2 litre OHC pinto, and anywhere from 250-290 horses.
(4 Litre, 4 cam, 32 valve VVT on later blocks).
They are pretty cheap here in NZ (about 1500 quid equivalent) and come with loom and ECU, but need a manual gbox & adaptor.
Apparently 4 inches narrower than Rover too, may even go in a 2.8 ??
And there are a few L6 DOHC around too, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, some at decent prices.
Thoughts anyone ??

Great engine but as with using any components that aren't "stock" there will be issues with fitment even if dimensionally similar
The engine may not go straight in due to fouling in some area (sump, ancillaries etc)so these may need modifying/moving etc
The 1uz engines only come with auto boxes i think most peeps would want a manual so that's something to consider
Then there's the 101 details that have to be overcome to finish the job - custom engine and gearbox mounts , adapting the prop to fit the new gearbox making an exhaust etc etc
Even little things like getting the speedo to work correctly (drive is taken from the back of the rover gearbox on std cars) may become a pain in the arse
For most of us who lack the time skills and facilities to do such a swap the only alternative would be to pay someone to do it for us(expensive)
Over here in the UK there are plenty of dying range rovers with decent 4.6 engines that with an overhaul a decent cam and some headwork could see you at 250-260 hp without any issues in trying to make it fit and work correctly. Probably easier and cheaper in the long run
Dont want to piss on your fireworks but there would be a lot of fabrication needed for such a conversion, but then I'm guessing that in NZ your options are more limited due to the type of cars/engines available being mostly Japanese??

Not sure on this engine but originally i was looking at two options with Delilah..Supercharged or a different engine...NA race prep 2.8i or small block V8..I wish i had gone the small block Ford 302, Could of got a race tuned 302 with ancillaries and a T5 gearbox for 7K fitted for 1K...Instead i chose blown...And thats what happened to the engine and money....Doh...
Rover V8 is comparatively rare here, and pricey, and all auto. If I was in UK I'd still probably go Rover V8 too. (I'd swop my 2.8 for a 350/400) Not so here. I was wondering, as it's been 20 years since I moved away.
Oz and NZ get lots of Jap imports, including domestic stuff not intended for export (like the Toyota Blade, basically a Corolla but with a 270 horse 3.5 V6
), and half cuts, which can be a pretty good deal, all the wiring loom and ECU included. You can even find the people carriers with V8 engines, even a FWD one !!
So Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, GM stuff, including big V8 sizes can be had quite cheap, most V6 and V8 are DOHC, and all ally, but gearboxes a challenge on many. Even some of old style cast iron V8 fairly cheap, but too big/heavy for a series 1 2.8 without serious mods. Can even still get RB25 with gearbox, but they are getting expensive. BMW L6 still quite expensive, and nearly all autos. Companies in Oz do adaptors to Toyota truck/pickup gearboxes (5 and 6 speed), T56, etc. and sumps and brackets.
Yeah it's a fair bit of messing around whatever I do.....
Zig - Ford 302 Windsor is getting harder to find even out here, it got replaced with Cleveland version in the Falcons, Cleveland is quite a bit bigger (and heavier).
Thanks Guys....interesting.

I'd never heard of the Sabre.
Interesting: http://www.almac.co.nz/sabre/sabre_s2.htm
A little bit of S2000 in the front end styling but the V8 sits nice.
