400SE Bush replacement

Taking the old girl into Wedge Automotive ( soon to be called something else by the way ) at the end of the month to have all the bushed replaced. Lets say the handling is ' Vague and interesting ' at the moment ! Richard has quoted me around £700. Now for the quandry. I good mate of mine has just opened a garage. I'm going over to look at it in the morning. It's a propper workshop with a proper lift etc. He's said he will do the job for me. Now I'm torn ...... Richard Thorpe who I'm sure will do a superb job or my mate ( who is a good mate ) who will do it much cheaper........ but ..... you know what I mean ... He may do a fantastic job ......

I understand your problem. I just had Richard do a ton of work on my new wedge, and apart from a minor oversight (not attaching the distributor properly), he did a great job. I really want to be a one garage guy, but Sheffield is a long way from London, and I would like a place to go when I'm worrying about trivia.
I'm no mechanic, though for the first time ever I'm trying to be a bit more useful with the car. Frankly without this support group I don't think I would have even considered buying a wedge.
Anyway, your friend that will do it cheap, asking pertinent questions about setting up the alignment should let you know if he's worth considering. Another wedge specialist in the making can't be a bad thing.

Bear in mind that the front suspension is mostly Ford Granada / cortina so bush replacement is straightfoward.
On the rear it's also very simple with 'metalastic' bushes (steel sleeve supporting rubber sleeve supporting steel inner) where the worse that can happen is that it's all rusted togther, so use of hacksaw down the middle then large hammmers are often required. Also well worth fitting Super-pro bushes from Tower view as the polyurethane is much better bush material than the rubber but not as hard as nylon so you keep some compliance.
These are simple cars and relativley easy to maintain.
I'd let your mate do it as it's definitly not rocket science and he can always ring Richard at Wedge up for advice (posing as normal punter of course).
