Been posting on the Wedge FB page about the 420SE re commissioning.......so not to neglect PH, here one for you all :-)

Below is a reference pic which is the same layout as my 420

So my question.

Why do we need the very short bit of black flexible brake hose in between the copper line running down the chassis and the caliper......per the picture it runs........copper line........short black flexible hose.......then short copper line going into the drivers side caliper

Why cant I go......copper line.........flexible hose.........straight into the caliper?

Hi Glen...

A small amount of rubber line is necessary for flexibility, but only the bare minimum.

There is movement in the wheels...Suspension and diff cradle.....Flexible hose is pants for the pressure so rather than it popping off the caliper its copper...I should imagine..

Plus it would be a right pig to replace...smile

Cheers

I expect it was because there was a ready-made rubber hose with those ends easy and cheap to get.

But it does remind us all there's another rubber bit at the back of the brake circuit getting ready to perish....

Hard nylon type of pipe (may be something far more technical than nylon?)

See no problem with going braided hose from chassis and onto the calliper scratchchin

No idea but I think it's stainless braid and as suggested, some kind of good hose on the inside. The braid protects the hose and keeps it from swelling. Usually used on the front calipers and the rear chassis to axle section. Typical upgrade on MGBs and others (and my 280i). Grady

It was a bit of a wind-up question, but the answer is there's a rubber hose inside, so you end up with a slowly perishing hose with the cracks hidden from sight by the outer braid. Not good!

Is there by golly ?

How about Teflon PTFE

ETA. never use brake pipe clamps on braided hoses, it doesn't come back to shape like a rubber hose will!
