Hi All

on the 420 upward and some 350`s the bonnet has vents in that are alternately situated.
Does anyone have a picky of the engine actually under these? are there intakes under them or something else? or was it mainly cosmetic to look nicer.
My 390 has a 9" x 3" grill at the top of the bonnet and yesterday I saw 2 wedges without and grill/vents ????

cheers

They are on the 390se upwards and I think some 350's have had them retro fitted or special order from factory, they were presumably put in to assist cooling, there is nothing beneath them other than a mesh and I am sure they have more of an aesthetic appeal than anything.

Where are based Brentyboy? I notice you are around North West like me.

Hi Brent...The best bonnet design was the late 280i and the early 350i..Someone has fitted a S1 bonnet to an S2 Wedge....The vents are predominantly meant to alleviate the heat build up when stopping but do act as draw point when moving, Although i wouldn't know how efficient they are if at all?...I have a friend who modded his 350i S2 bonnet..He had a vent glassed in above the air filter ...Mainly because he transplanted a 300bhp 5.0ltr HC Griff monster in there!.

My 350i bonnet doesn't have any vent at all just a curled up lip on the top of the bonnet...Which to be fair with the rad fan on does work.

You could route some cold air feed in from the nosecone area as i did and it really does make a difference on the running temperature...Quite significant in fact....

Cheers Mark
I might have a look at weekend when she is back (hopefully) just as a precautionary measure.

Steve, cheers for that. Might have to pop over and see this beauty as only see the corner from your prof pic. In essence your bonnet is as I would like mine so would be great to see it in the flesh sometime and yes only about 10 mins away and a great pint of real ale in the Eagle also :-)

There's nothing under the bonnet vents. The forward one is above the air filter, so arguably encourages cooler air in, and I suppose the rear one might do something to vent hot air from the engine bay. Mostly a styling exercise I suspect.

The rear one is above the battery, which lets it get wet in the rain. Which is a bit bizarre.
