For those not on FB I thought I'd share my problem

Out for a potter yesterday and weirdly it was a potter vs giving it the beans

Pulled up at some lights and slowed down dropped clutch and stopped but the could not get out of 4th gear. Either with engine on or off its stuck in 4th

Managed to limp home, thank goodness she can pull off the line in 4th

Got home, put on stands and examined the remote, all bushes are fine and the remote is also fine, even checked the remote grub screw which can cause this symptom

So with her on stands I started her up again with the clutch pressed, then lifted the clutch and this noise (see video) can be heard. Press the clutch and the noise goes away

It's clearly a box out job but any ideas on issue?

Hi Glen...That is a loud noise...How new is the release bearing, This noise can also arise from a new friction plate....

Ouch, Glen sorry to hear the bad news and bloody horrible noise. Not sure what it is but doesn't sound good. Looks like you'll have to get your finger out and get the SEAC sorted for the BBWF!

I don't think its as easy to fit a T5 than it would be to get the old LT77 rebuilt...Or exchanged with Ashcroft transmissions....Under 500 sobs for a fully rebuilt exchange....

Here is an old post floating around the subject.

hi glen

likely you changed the fluid in the box and clutch, so everything should be lubed up.

i have heard a few noises like us all from the box, nothing like that but with it stuck in gear sounds possibly like a bent finger, stopping you dis-engage. (which would be just the clutch, so engine forward)

either that or your box is toast (hopefully not)

A story:

once going to Ipswich my 350i got stuck in 4th after I ran out of petrol on the slip road and left it in gear (due to ineffective handbrake).

I then had to drive the rest of the way to work in 4th, park up in 4th (pushed it into the parking bay) then drive out of Ippy again in 4th. On the way home I occasionally tried the clutch to see if it would budge.

After about 30 miles of 4th gear cruising, I tried the clutch and all was back to normal, up to 5th, then when I cam off the dual cabbageway all gears were back.

So that's my suggestion - check the gearbox oil level, then drive it for a while, it will pop back into service.

Fourth gear is 'special' in that it locks the input and output shafts together and doesn't use the layshaft; although the layshaft still spins. Looks like the input and output shafts are locked together, not good... although it could be the selectors trying to select more than one gear at a time. Recon/rebuild/ebay time I suspect.

Thanks for all the comments

Clutch is an unknown, I've not changed it since owning her. Fluid level is fine also

It's an odd one as I wasn't giving it the beans at all when this happened

Going to bite the bullet and get it booked in for the work to be done and have the gearbox rebuilt. I know there are some options on making it stronger whilst being re built so will have these. I'll put a new clutch in also as I don't know how old it is.

Just gotta spend the money as I don't have the time between now and the fest to DIY

Ho hum.....
