How long should they last? I reckon mines on its orignal, which makes it 17 years old. Should I be looking at replacing it....?

No need as long as it still works. Basically it's two coils of wire in a sealed can full of oil. Thermal failure is more usual, due to repeated heating and cooling, though the insulating top can track if not kept clean. If the oil leaks due to damage, then air will enter and cause tracking too.
IIRC my Tasmin coil still had 1980 as the date of manufacture, when I sold it in 2001...
