Fuel Sender Gasket 280i
Discussion
I did this job last week with a gasket from TVR Parts (& a tip from Neil at ML). If your sender is the same as mine, the item you need is L0174 . When you offer it up, it may be that the holes don't line up. Rotate it until they do. Mine worked with the notch at 3 o'clock. Give there are 5 holes you might expect them to be 72 degrees apart. It's TVR so they aren't

The tank was off the car so it was very easy to fit. Good luck it you're trying to do it in situ. You do need to make a note of which way it is fitted to the tank so you put it back in exactly the same place. Just use a felt pen to mark the tank and the sender back plate before you take the sender out. Mine was a Stewart Warner one, with 6 bolts (or 8?). It started leaking slightly, and sender got jammed (the contact pip came loose). I repaired sender and ended up making new gasket out of gasket paper and using fuel proof gasket sealer, and managed to do it all in place without moving tank. It's a bit tricky but doable. Not had leaks since.
Did measure my SW sender, and it's calibrated about the same as the Triumph (Smiths) ones, so older bolt on senders from stuff like Triumph Herald, Morris 1000 ? would probably work... Newer Smiths senders had a kind of 'clip and lock' setup with a rubber ring seal.
(e.g Triumph saloons, Dolomite, SD1).
Not sure exactly which is what, but SW appear to use same resistance ranges as Smiths for both their temp and fuel senders.
