Hi Colin

I believe there are two bolts...One at each end of the sill...They are accessible from inside the footwells and I think it was either bottom of the rear trim or inside the rear wheel arch for the ones at the rear end...??....

The front bolts are under the carpet ..You should be able to feel where but it will need pulling back....smile

Yep, the rear one you need to remove the trim behind the seats to get into the front of the rear wheel arch. its right at the bottom. If your lucky you might get it to slacken off but i had to remove all other fastening first and then on this one i had to use a thin hacksaw blade between the sill and body to slice the bolt in half. I then bonded a new bolt into place with large washer for replacement.

You might find that the sill is riveted where it joins the body along the base of the door opening....mine was plus it was sealed in using mastic.

I didn't find bolts on my 350i's just pop rivets and self tappers.

Same as Adam

Mine had 5 rivets attaching each side to the lower door sill. A couple each side attaching the bottom of the sill to the floor. The front was held in place with a split pin! and flexible sealant. The rear just sealant.

Just took the sill of the near side of Ade's 390 and that has all the rivets plus a long 6mm bolt front and rear. I will be modifying mine this way next time they are off. As the sealant make it a pain to remove them for inspection.

Hope it's all solid under there.

Karl.

Mine, 86 280i S2, were just riveted on. A line of rivets under the weather stripping inside the door jam and a line underneath. No bolts. Very easy to remove.

'84 280i and put my sills back on this week. probably 12 rivets under the car and in the door aperture for each side. 6mm bolts through the car does seem a little excessive...

Both my '80 Tasmin and '87 390 had/have the sills held by a line of pop rivets below the door seal, a couple of pops into the floor from underneath and a pair of captive M6 bolts, near the front and rear ends of the sill. On both cars they were corroded to hell and had to be destroyed to remove them.
There were also generous dollops of black Sikaflex-type mastic helping to keep the sills in place.
On the 390 I made new captives by welding stainless M6 set-screws to some perforated stainless sheet and glassed them into the sills - did the same for the front airdam as well, to make future removal rather easier than it was when the radiator had to come out.
