Google hasn't been to forthcoming with answers so a quick shout to the [two] hive mind[s].

I have a spare heat exchanger unit left over from my S build - this type of unit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A3-A4-A6-A8-VW-T4-G...

I have added the remote filter to the S and this sits between the the filter and the remote housing. Has anyone fitted something similar to their Wedge? Its more for day to day regulation of temps and faster warm up times rather than ultimate oil temp control.

Secondly, has anyone fitted an electric hydraulic power steering pump as fitted to the T cars - this type http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-407-SW-electric-...

Thanks.

Heat exchanger - No as the 400 has an oil cooler

Electric PAS pump - Yes, have a look at my body off thread "another body off" here The pump you linked is the wrong one, you need the earlier unit that only has a 12v supply. The one in the link uses an ecu to drive it.

While it's not a bad conversion as it allows a lot more space around the engine and the PAS still works in the wet (N/S tyre threw water on old belt drive) I'm having problems supplying the Pas pump and the rest of the cars electrics enough juice, driving with the lights on has fried a couple of alternator belts, now this maybe due to the Ebay alternator i've got but I'm not taking any chances so I'm now fitting a 100A serpentine alternator with a flat belt.

The electric hydraulic power steering pump as fitted to the T cars are a lot better than the Corsa E.PAS

The Cosworth uses an oil cooler (they call it a Modine) and seems to work well. It has the advantage of working both ways, heating the oil when it's cold and cooling it when the engine is up to temperature. The Cosworth doesn't have an oil cooler so I'm not sure what the effect would be of combining both (if you were thinking of doing this). I think it's usually an either/or situation.
One disadvantage is if it fails as you could end up with water in the oil or oil in the water, but I guess if an oil cooler fails you could end up with no oil in the system.
Cheers Steve

What about using the Saxo/106 Electric pump and reservoir as fitted to my chim?

Cheap to buy off eBay, easy to wire and pipework is available From hydraulic pipe suppliers.

I took a direct feed from the starter motor to the pump via another 100 amp fuse holder, ( I think I put a 60 amp fuse in there).
I then took a feed from the fuel pump relay to trigger the running of the pumpso the pump only runs with the ignition on and the engine running.

The pump came with its own reservoir and wiring to connect as above.

I can talk you through it and show you when I see you next.

I have no experience of PAS but the unassisted steering of my wedge was much improved with decent front suspension tie rod bushes (also adjusted to take out the slack) so I'd try that first. It also made the steering much lighter, although at parking speeds it's still stuck in the 80's.

As for the oil cooler... do you really want to add a 120 DegC heater into the decidedly haphazard original cooling system? Or do you have plans for the cooling system as well? An additional oil/air cooler would add to the total cooling, I think your proposed oil/coolant heat exchanger will just move heat around without actually rejecting much more. The oil/air cooler on the SEAC has a thermostatic bypass to aid warm up, I'm not sure if they all do.

Thanks for replies guys.

No oil cooler just the 'modine' ala the S and the T cars.

Peter, yes it was your specific set up I was thinking of. The existing pump is leaky.

Leigh,

In What way are they better and what are they off?

I have a new Corsa EPS ready to drive a new close-ratio RS2000 rack. Your reply could change my parts collection so be careful what you say :-)

I too have fitted an early Saxo EPAS in place of the engine driven mechanical pump.

Its up an running, feels OK.

Its switchable, so I can turn it off if just running the engine on the drive and on if pushing the car about in the garage. Feels quite nice, not too light.

It is quite a bit unit but I mounted mine behind the rad where there is plenty of room and rubber mounted it to stop the vibration.

BTW - I have the 100amp griff style alternator with flat belt drive.

When I fitted my corsa EPAS to the racer there was only one option of 3rd party controller, this did not give enough adjustment as was very light, so only used for parking. also gave no feed back. I think there maybe better options on controller now, but still trying to find info and real world tests.
A few of the other racers use the Electric to hydraulic system and they say they are very good.

I've got a Citroen Saxo pump fitted to my 350i. Uses the standard PAS rack. Works really well for me. The reservoir sits up on the inside or the near side wing.

Regards Karl.
