Can anyone please tell me what needs to be removed out of the way to remove the valve covers. I've never done this job on a 400SE and need to replace them as they are seeping slightly. I've tried tightening the screws but still leaks. It looks a little simpler on the drivers side as there seems to be less in the way but I'd like some advice from someone who's done this job before please. Also which gasket I should use. Do I buy the rubber ones with the metal ring inserts or the cork gaskets with no inserts? Many thanks.

I would get the rubber items .. much better.

I think you have to pop the top off the plenum unless you remove part of the water feed into the bottom of the plenum.. which from memory is not really needed on our cars. The last thing we need is a hotter plenum.

Rubber gaskets all day long, the steel inserts stop the risk of over tightening. you can also re-use them if you ever fancy a rocker cover polish up. The near side cover will need the plenum lifting up but don't be frightened its not that bad to doo.

Apparently my advice on this subject is no longer required.

Hopefully Tony you've already read it, and hopefully found it helpful, but for the rest of you, and for future reference, you'll have to try the internet wayback machine.

Thanks for all your replies gentlemen. I have read every thread and also done a search, so am now confident I have all the information needed to do the job successfully. I shall buy the rubber gaskets with the metal rings and use red hermetite to reseal the plenum. I will also check the condition of the trumpets, clean out the plenum and use a blue silicon hose on the end of the plenum which I already have to match the rest of the piping.
