Replacing Rocker Cover Gaskets !!!
Discussion
Today, the plan was to change both rocker cover gaskets. The offside gasket is in fact the one that's leaking but to be on the safe side I ordered two rubber gaskets with the metal inserts. I removed the offside rocker cover without too much trouble. It just needed the oil breather pipe disconnected. Other than that the rest of the piping etc. could be pushed aside. The old cork gasket was in pieces and very tired. I sat down on the bench in the garden and cleaned the rocker cover inside out. scraped off all the silicon previously applied etc. All ready to go and the first problem struck. The rubber gasket with the metal inserts is a nightmare to fix onto the cover. I tried silicon, glue, just about everything before I gave up. There is no way that heavy rubber gasket will stay in place long enough to fit back. It must be designed for the later engines. Mine is a 1989. So, off to the local spares shop and bought a cork one. Unfortunately they only had one, so I only managed to do the offside, but I was pleased because that was the offending side. I will do the other side another day when I manage to get another CORK gasket. A WORD OF WARNING TO THOSE WANTING TO THIS JOB. BUY A CORK GASKET. I waisted nearly two hours cleaning the silicon off the rocker cover that I had applied to secure the rubber gasket. Job done satisfactorily for now, but a lesson learned. Couple of pictures.
