280i Steering Rack Question

I was trying to trace an oil drip around the front n/s rack. I pulled back the gaiter and about 100mls oil spilled out when I pulled the gaiter off the steering box. That’s not normal is it?

Any suggestions?

NB. it's not a PAS rack.

Mine were packed with grease, not oil.

To pack with grease do I slide the boot back and work the lube along the rack or is there a plate/plug I can remove?

I'm pretty sure the rack is filled with oil and some will escape if you take the boot off. I rebuilt mine off the car using a Cortina Haynes manual as a guide and I remember filling it with oil when holding it upright.
