Is it really just VELCRO?
Discussion
Hi - folks.
Its been a while - all sorts of distractions from jobs getting done on the 400/460.
Finally got aroud to looking at an issue with the hood as I start to prep the car for a post Christmas respray.
The first few inches behind the doors where the hood attaches to the bodywork - before you get to the more robust frame. On my car this gap has been closed by some pretty tatty VELCRO - now expired. Is this correct? Or should there be some form of pop fastener or similar through the hood?

To make a neater job of this area you can bend a length of alloy or zinc plate(*) so that it covers the gap in the tub. Cover the plate with hood material and Velcro and put a pop-stud fastening on the front by the top of the 'B' post. This stud and a couple of self-tappers on the inside out of sight gives you a much better fixing for this part of the hood and neatly covers the unsightly gap TVR couldn't be bothered to deal with properly.
This photo is out of focus I'm afraid but it's the only one I have ...

This is on my V8S but the design (or rather lack of) is the same.
(* look for soakers at the builders' merchant)

Difficult to stick press studs on with glue though.
My two TVR's both had Velcro.
Good old fashioned drill and pop rivets. My two TVR's both had Velcro.
And if I might add a bit over the top for fixing a bit of Velcro

That's all well and good but doesn't fit with the traditional TVR production methods.

The side of the hood from B post back for 12" was fastened to the body with poppers not the velco! A bit of proper engineering.

They don't make them like they used to, and that was part of the old TVR charm and attraction.
If you want to do a "proper job" on this are then the only way is to extend the hoop which secures the lower part of the hood to the tub. Extend the hoop on either side to where it meets the top of the 'B' post. Fix this hoop securely to the tub. This means that you have a secure fixing point for the Velcro and popper-stud and also makes a nice neat cover for the gap between the inner and outer tub at the same time.

Obviously this is really on practical if you're fitting a new hood.
