Power steering parts

Good afternoon gents,

I've purchased a power steering rack for the 87 350i and now need to collect the Pump, Pump Bracket, Pulley, Hoses, Reservoir and such.
Might anyone have any of the above laying around? Know the correct source? Don't know what kind of beer tokens you guys use but I can supply some.

Hi, the power rack is driven off a standard Rover SD1 V8 power steering pump. There's generally always a few on fleabay. The pump is driven off the crank pulley, which you may need to change if yours is not suitable for the steering pump.

I would of thought that the bracket would also be Rover?

Not mine! I have a Heath Robinson original! Means the pump is at the top of the engine rather than being buried and a pig to get to!

Yeah I have that one but I have seen some Wedges with a pump that you cant see unless you look down the front of the engine..
Just thinking that if its a TVR specific part then ...good luck...

GMW9666, so there is actually 2 mounting brackets, one bolted to the engine and one bolted to the pump. The two allow for adjustment of the belt? correct?
Does the normal Landy hose kit work for the connections between the pump and rack? or do I need to go to a bespoked set?

Correct interms of adjustment. As for which hoses, not sure on that one.

Any hydraulics company would be able to make appropriate hoses.

Hi Charlie,

Congratulations on deciding to convert to power steering...

I did this on my 350i a couple of years ago....

You will encounter issues, but not the ones that you are thinking about right now, the rack will bolt down onto the manual rack mounts, almost, you will find you have to cut a "V" out of the front top of the crossmember to enable it to clear the casting on the PAS rack. This for me was the most scary part, this was done with just the ARB removed. Cut and welded from under the wheelarch, with not much room, had to weld without gloves!

The other issue you may well find is that using the lower "Rover" bracket is that the pump pulley fouls on the crankshaft pulley, this effectively halted my conversion until someone donated one of the "TVR" pump brackets allowing the pump to be mounted in the high position in front of the left hand side cylinder head. This wasn't easy as the bracket, which was a welded up TVR special, had to be packed with washers to get the belt to line up properly.

However, the pain is all worthwhile, the joy of being able to place the car exactly where I wanted in a bend, roundabout etc made driving a pleasure, to say nothing of parking...

Wedge is now moved on to another owner, but I still frequent the forum to assist other users, particularly when I have been there and done what they are asking about.

For what it's worth, if I did this again, I would go down the electrical pump route rather than the engine driven pump, probably with some electronic control that turned assistance off or down at above parking speeds.
