Front air grills on 2.8i Mk 1 bonnet lid

Hi all,on the 2.8i bonnet Mk 1 the 2 front grills are closed off underneath -is this normal or should they be open to aid cooling? If so is there anything to stop water getting in?

IIRC they have a moulded piece of fibreglass over them that should have a slot in the bottom?...I removed mine..the mesh won't stop heavy downpours but then most water ends up in the recesses of the battery area and opposite ...I think the slots in them helped to guide any water down the front part of the engine bay....Plus after nearly 8 years im now convinced that these cars were not meant to be driven in the rain...

Mine has an automatic roof remover at high speed in the rain...

Hi ,I might make a box that fits on the underside with a derrade in it so only air can get in and a drain to get the water out and away out of the engine bay.
