FIrst of all let me say thank you chaps for helping a newbie out... I have learned so much from you already.
I have a 84 FH 280i total project car. Was poking around at the frame yesterday and located the gas tanks...
so my dumb newbie question is how much fuel do they hold? they don't look very large at all.

Thanks

Grady

Fascinating question.
Per the book (manual) something like 7.5 US gallons each so ~14-15 gallons total. Per real life, it depends . (And across the pond, it's in liters to further complicate matters.)

I have never gotten more that ~7-8 gallons in. But what is surprising is that the two tanks (on my car anyway) don't equalize overnight (either per the gauge or by adding more) despite the cross-connecting hoses. And yes, when it's empty, it is really empty - both tanks tap hollow.

This is way down on my list of problems but if you have things apart and/or replace the hoses (5/8" marine), it's worth a study. Grady

PS/ Ask me about gauges next smile

As said around 7 gallons per tank...63 lites or there about's in total, although I doubt you would want to ever run it down to nothing...or even fill up totally...oh and dont believe the gauge...biggrin

....and my 350i holds 65 litres...although there was a trail of fuel from the petrol station to an ancient woodland in Belgium...that I nearly set fire to...yikes

My 400 takes about 7-8 gallons easily, the last 3-4 takes a long time, adding fuel slowly after each 'burp'!
If it doesn't balance between tanks, then either the balance pipe has collapsed or the breather pipe is blocked. Try leaving the fuel cap off overnight?
