Old subject. I've got a lazy RH headlight motor. Sometimes it raises or just sits there and suddenly pops up mad No problem, considered the winter rest so clean all the electrical connections sorted? Not. Swap relays so consider supply not an issue. Dismantled the pod and found the motor output shaft sometimes on selection did a complete 360 degree motion.?? Are Ri**ers the source for motor replacements (TR7) Thanks J C.

Have you tried cleaning up the connections in the switch block on the side of the motor? Cheers Steve

Thanks for the repies. Excellent write up. Yes connections have been looked at and cleaned, it was the articulation of the motor which surprised me. Further investigation needed I guess? Wesley knows he's going for his MOT and being an ass. Thanks again J C.

Just an update Chaps. I spent considerable time with the connections and cleaning the switch contacts, (Thanks Steve) on the lift motor which made no difference. I then noticed that the output shaft had a bit of end float thereby not pushing the contacts up far enough to break the circuit to the motor. Bu**er mad The plastic riser on the gear wheel was worn, so intermittently didn't actuate the two pins. Epoxy Resin repair carried out. Almost convinced myself to buy a new motor, rewire the circuit or wind the lights up and disable the lift motors for the MOT.idea TVR's never cease to surprise me. J C.

As a further question, are the lift motors handed? ie Left or Right? Mine are working now but the repairs I consider are only temporary until I source another motor. To add to the problem of replacing the motor; the operating arm has been welded to the motor output shaft!!: confused: I think these cranks that the operating control rod fit on are unobtainable?

John, the motors are not handed. I suspect the cranks are TVR specials but they look quite easy to fabricate. It's likely the flats on the motor shaft have rounded off and someone has welded it as a quick fix. The motors are available from Rimmer Brothers. (TR7). I also see there is currently one on ebay.

A good modification that can be carried out at the motors is to remove the diodes from inside the gearbox then fit and wire diodes inside the vehicle

Thanks for the replies. The auction for the reliant one has ended but messaged anyway. Interesting mod to put the diodes in the car. My problem is mechanical with wear on the plastic cam, followers and spring contacts.

If you are stuck for parts and can't fix the motors, as long as the gear teeth and its shaft/bush are ok you can use good waterproof microswitches as position sensors, you would need a microswitch for sensing the fully up position and a microswitch for sensing the fully down position and wire them in the same way as the motors internal contacts

Don't worry if it has ended he will almost certainly contact you.
Long story he bought three SS1's and has been braking them over the last couple of months.
He may have the matching one or others in stock.
If he doesn't reply I might be able to find his number from another forum (Reliant based).

What do you have to do to move the diodes into the car (I'm no sparky but can follow simple directions)

Thanks

Bypass/Bridge-out the motor diodes and wire in replacement diodes as below, I think you could use 2 diodes to do the whole job but if a diode failed both motors would fail, you would need to run a twin core cable to one motor and use the original White/Purple and White/Yellow for the other motor
