Well I think I found my starting/running problem. The original ignition module looks worse for wear:

It left half its bedding material on the fender:

Obviously the mounting location was established with the bonnet/hood off. Some kind of white putty was packed around the connectors (looked and felt like plumber's joint compound but smoother).

I found a used Ford module in my spares kit but the bedding material was getting soft so I dropped in a new generic spare. The only marking is a Mopar looking 'M' (or 'W') but the ends of the legs are different so I'm sure it's a copy. Anyone recognize the brand?

Had to move on to non-car projects today but it is definitely starting and running much better - all be it way out of tune!

I'll be the one championing the "check your Duraspark box" mantra. Grady

Looks like the same unit, still curious about the brand though.

Have one of them in my son's Tasmin for about five years now - works fine. Current price on rockauto.com starts at £9.38 + 5.72 shipping to the UK. Search for 1979 Mercury Capri 2.8 litre.

Well at it you can get spark plug lead sets for about £3.77 plus shipping, although I bought the ones that were twice that price and are actually good quality. Spark leads are one of those products that must have 1000% mark up for some vendors.
