Replacing the fuel hoses on my Tasmin and wanted to install an inline fuel filter between the swirl pot and the fuel pump. It’s 1/2” ID hose and I’m not seeing any filters that big. I was wondering what others have done.

Another option if you feel like spending a bit more money. You can take this apart and replace the filter element for a fiver.

I fitted a Syvecs unit many years ago. The original paper element restricted fuel flow at higher revs/power if the tank was less than half full. Paper element was then changed for mesh strainer type. This has worked fine for many years. I also fitted a ball valve in line between the swirl pot and the Syvecs, so fuel can be shut off when cleaning/checking filter, or working on pump etc.

+1 for sytec plus mesh. Paper is no good after about 20k miles it will be clogged.

It works, but can be expensive.

You can also get plastc mesh ones off ebay for around £8 with 12mm inlet/outlet.

You should aim for around 100 micron mesh, give or take.

Mmmm? isn't that what the filter is for, to catch crap? If you are clogging a filter in 20,000 miles you have a problem elsewhere scratchchin

I suspect, as Hamish said, the paper element offers too much restriction to flow for the pump to pull through?

Aren't the swirl pots supposed to have a mesh filter?...Mine didnt rattle when it was removed so hopefully not rotted inside...Definitely change the post pump filter...

I got one of those inline filters (like the ebay link above or RT Racing Supply) for about £12 from www.inlinefilters.co.uk

Exactly the same part without the TVR tax...

Yes it's there to catch crap, but don't forget that after the pump you have a big paper one which has much more crap catching capability.

When the post pump filter starts to clog, the pump works a bit harder but the overall feedback through the rail pressure regulator maintains pressure. So everything stays working.

On the other hand, if the prefilter clogs, what happens is you get a partial vacuum in the feed to the pump. In extreme, the feed line snaps shut under atmospheric pressure and you get total starvation (not great for the pump either). This happened to me and was a mystery for many months until I twigged what was happening.

The pump can put up with "fine" crud, it's the big bits you need to catch in the prefulter. Also, if it's mesh, then you can wash it out and re-use, My sytec mesh element gets washed out every 20k or so. Last time I found some bits of sand and hair (!).

Cool. Thanks to everyone for the input. I think the insides of my swirlpot is what was rattling around and came out on crusty particles!

Found a Wix #32399 on the FIAT X1/9 forum that is appropriate here stateside, but can’t find the actual part. Had NAPA run that number and will be getting their equivalent...I hope. I’ll post the number when I get it...if it’s all tickety-boo.
