rear drive shafts

im just finnishing the rear end rebuild and doing up the big drive shaft nuts should there be any play when they are tight

Define play? There should be no 'in & out' movement (or the stub axle is moving through the bearings), no up/down/ side to side (or the bearings are U/S.
However you may get a bit of a clonk if you rotate the hub forward and back, this is the lash in the differential (or could be knackered U/Js, but presumably not if you've just had it all apart!).

new ujs new bushes new bearings the play i have is when you hold the top and bottom of the wheel as if you r checking for a worn bearing i have some play but i have just had a look at the large washer and it has a small ridge maybe this is the problem

What has the large nut been torqued up to? IIRC it should be around 230lbft.

checked rear nut with 5 feet long torque wrench that goes from 100 to 750 lb per ft nearly turned the on its roof just got my son to move wheel and found its
