Hi, are the rear hood struts still available? I've been advised by my Hood Restorer that it is a good idea to replace the rear struts with improved items? Chrome ones? Apparently the original ones wear affecting the rear hood tension? Thanks J C.

Polished alluminium, not chrome wink

If Mr. Strange wants £260 for a pair I'd hazard a guess the "going rate" is about £130 a pair although they don't seem to come up for sale too often these days. Supply and demand and all that stuff perhaps they are fetching a bit more these days?

There was someone making some very similar alternatives but with the amount of work involved they weren't cheap!

Here you go, have a read through this............. Alloy Hood Stays

Of course the cheap option, depending how "hands on" you are is the repair/replace all the worn pivots and pins on yours, presuming you have the black painted steel items?

Surely you can easily take out the wear by adjusting and/or adding a shim or two if necessary?

Keeps the original @retro@ tubular steel look ;^)

Thanks Mike/Adam. I have found a source, alloy, through the TVR Owners Site, CMoris? Advertised for Chim's, however I believe they can be fitted with a little alteration reading past posts. About £200 for the pair. I will examine mine for a decision. Also the hoop is another area of corrosion concern being hidden by fabric? However a good point on originality. J C.

You are going to have to drill some new holes in the rear panel and patch the carpet up as the Chimp/Griff struts are a different length. Also be careful if you are going to buy some off eBay etc as these ali struts, if involved in a car that has had a rear shunt will have damaged the hinges.

i think the difference is barely "half a hole" (wedge may be different to an S?), not a major issue scratchchin

That would have to be some serious back ender to damage the hinges, wouldn't it?

I'd be more worried about buying tatty old scratched and tarnished units off some breakers wink

Thanks Mike, true. I did find a supplier who also manufactures hood for Chim's. However, I'd like to keep it original and mine look OK. The hoop is more of a concern in that any corrosion damage is not visible until hood repacement. Time will tell. Yes would have been a fair old rear shunt to damage the struts.eek J C.

Roger Morris who makes the Surrey folding centre section for the chim and griff roofs also makes alloy struts for Wedges. They differ from TVR ones, having 2 joints in the middle so that they do not pinch or rub on the fabric. They have a sliding lock to hold them rigid. His company is Cambria Cirrus. He does not advertise the struts on his site, but has previously showed me a set. No idea what the price is
