have just bought another wedge a 400se this time which is red and the clear top coat (cant spell lacqer) is coming off in two areas , has anyone restore this stuff without having a respray and can i just gently rub it down and respray the stuff , and also with the 400se should it have lots of low down grunt or do they all pickup with lots of push at about 3000rpm, and it has side pipes .

On my 1989 400se, 3000rpm is when the warp factor kicks in .

You can rub the clear lacquer down to feather the edges in, then give it another top coat.

As for the power delivery, I find my 390SE (same capacity as a 400SE now) only really starts to wake up above 3000 rpm...

I think that the RV8 can be powerful or it can be torquey, but seemingly not both at the same time.
Otherwise there'd be 150 mph RangeRovers everywhere...

I had a similar problem on my doors a couple of years back, the problem with trying to feather it in is that the base coat is very very thin and it takes no effort at all to go through to the primer (speaks from expereience here), which on a dark coloured car is a real bugger.

I think I read some where that the factory had some problems with paint work on some of the bigger cars, I think when a lot of them were new they had to go back for re-sprays.

To do the job properly, the only option is to take it to a specialist. And be aware, you pay for what you get with spray people. Quallity has a price.

thanks for the answers , i'll give it a go when i pick it up on friday and see if i can do it myself first ,its only a couple of small areas ,and the 400se does seem a completly different monster compared to a 350i,superb.
