Hi
Have you ever topped up the diff?...I used this in mine and seems all good for the last 3 years...I have mine topped up and UJ's greased very 6 months.

Keep your mind open to possibilities when there are noises from the rear. They can be very hard to locate.
I had a whirring and actually replaced the diff, to find eventually it was a wheel bearing, noisy (at speed) but not slopping about. I eventually pinpointed it with the help of a contact microphone.
What also doesn't help is that even when everything is working properly, a wedge can be pretty noisy due to the engine, exhaust, wind noise etc when compared against contemporary cars, let alone modern cars.

Adam has a good point there...and sometimes these noises are heard at the front which will confuse you even more..I had a worn rear wheel bearing but it never made hardly any noise and there was no initial play when checked...however at the MOT 3 months later there was an horrendous amount of play..check up & Down...left to right and in & Out movement of the rear wheel..also check your rear N/S hub nut...I would also check inner and outer UJ's.
It's worth an fluid change on the diff if it's not been done for a while. Mine was well in need of a change when it was making a noise I think most of the noise was from a failed bearing that was changed at the same time. It would appear that greasing bearings, UJs and refreshing difficult to access fluids is optional on many services.
