Rear cradle plate
Discussion
Hi
Been looking under car and found some rust that was mentioned on last mot on plate at rear of car under diff area . It’s below diff carrier and has rubbers above it .just wondered if anybody’s replaced it or repaired it and how . Would I have to remove all the diff ,suspension etc or could I plate it in situ .any thoughts anybody
Thanks

Hi Trace if it's that flat plate that the body sits on at the back then they all get a bit rusty, surface rust isn't a problem just clean it up and hammerite it.
However if it has rusted right through then likely the crossmember in front of it and slightly higher will be perforated too, there are two tubes here at 45 degrees forming a trapezium shape, it's possible you will have to have some of them chopped off, a new section welded in, as the diff cradle bolts to this lot and the rear suspension hangs off the diff cradle, it has to be solid.
To get at it the diff will have to be dropped off. That's worst case scenario, hopefully it isn't that bad.
I also put old UJ grease onto this hidden crossmember from the top to avert tinworm....
This is the sort of thing I mean (image courtesy of Engineer1949...)
