valve /cam replacement

hope some one here can help with this as no joy in chim forum. been to look at a 4.0 chimera:paperbag: today which sounded like it had got a burnt out valve. just needed to know how mush it would cost to replace this and maybe change the cams whilst it is stripped.

A new full race cam just went on fleabay for £45.
The shops advertise them for around £120
A new valve would be about £15 at a guess.

You're looking at labour charges plus some unknown costs which depend on the valves used, or if the cam is shot. Say £500 max.

How did it 'sound' like a burnt valve?
Funny noises and/or rough running could mean worn cam lobe, blowing exhaust gasket, dead sparkplug, cracked head, head gasket blown, holed piston, piston slap, small end, big end, duff injector, incorrect ignition timing....

Not wishing to worry you, I'm sure it's a fine motor

wedgie it sounded like a blowing manifold gasket when the car was being driven, but when stood next to engine it sounded like it was coming from passenger side bank , engine was running smooth, it could have been worn cam lobe and that was why i asked how much cames where.

Hmmm. Depends on how much (if any) work you could do yourself. I know the Chimaera engine bay isn't the most spacious thing; maybe with the exhausts out of the ay it'd be possible to strip the engine in the car and replace cam, followers etc.
The RV8 isn't a complicated thing to work on but of course you need the tools and space etc.
All I can say is it wouldn't worry me; it runs and that's the main thing! If it's a bargain, buy it and park it till you have the necessaries...

The parts wouldn't worry me, as Ian says it's the labour. Just replaced the sump rear cover seal yesterday on the Tasmin, took about 10 hours in total, as I had to drop the diff. What would that be in labour (£300???) but only £2.95 for the gasket.

If you replace the cam then you need to replace the followers too, and if the cam is worn then the timing gear will be too so you will want to replace that. By the time you add it all up I think you would be looking at the thick end of £500 in parts, for a straight forward cam change.

Cam change is an engine in job on Griffi and Chimaera. Fairly good access. Well actually better than on a Wedge in this case as the front slopes away.
