Noise & vibration on changing gear

Took the Wedge out for a spin (to Basildon and back ... don't ask, OK, just don't ask ;)) last Wednesday. No problems on the way there, but one the way back I had two.
Firstly one headlight pod would not pop up and neither could I turn the knob to bring it up (wouldn't you just know it!) .. that's a sortable problem however.
The other puzzles and concerns me more.
On changing between odd-numbered gears and even-numbered ones (i.e. front of gate to back), there is a loud 'graunching' noise and a severe vibration which feels like the dogs haven't engaged. Holding the gear lever back and trying to 'force' engagement causes the noise and vibration. However, the gear has actually already been selected (as I found out when I released the clutch, thinking it was in neutral :( ... fortunately only damaging my pride ;)).
It also feels as though the travel of the gear-knob has lengthened slightly ... but that's highly subjective.
There is no noise once the gear is engaged.
Any ideas on where to start looking? (I hate gearboxes!)

Sounds a lot like the bushes that hold the gearshift extension to the back of the 'box are shot!
Try lifting the stick up and down: if you can feel some clonks that's probably it; the vibration you can feel is the front propshaft U/J hitting the bottom of the extension...

Now, how difficult a job is it? I can borrow the use of a hydraulic lift, but do I need to drop the box or can the bushes be changed in situ?

Pull the tunnel top up, whip out the gearlever gaiter. Remove the rubber gaiter underneath. Remove gearlever.
13mm spanner on the side bolts, 13mm socket and 8-10" extension to get the bolts out of the box. Wiggle extension around to disconnect from pin on rear of 'box and extract extension through hole in tunnel.
Assuming the hole is big enough, of course
Reassemble in reverse order, providing you have Hands Like A Paedophile (tm).
You may have to resort to jacking rear of car up and sliding underneath to engage selector shaft with pin, and get side bolts in, but it's less hassle than, say, changing rear brake pads or shimming-up the fuel valves on a Space Shuttle...
I'm trying to picture which are the bushes referred to.

I gather that Rimmers do a Polybush kit for the extension, though it's not shown in the V8 spares catalogue that I have.

You can see the bright area on the lower cover, at the left-hand side, where the propshaft UJ had been clouting it...

Yeah, in the third pic ('detail') you can see there's a bolt with a steel sleeve and two stepped rubber bushes. All four mounting points use two of these rubbers, though there are two lengths of sleeve (ie two long sleeves, two short sleeves, 8 rubbers, 2 long bolts, 2 short bolts).
The longer bolts/ sleeves hold the alloy extension onto the back of the box, the short ones secure the steel strap to the sides of the box.

It wasn't the bushes!
No. The problem was that one bolt, one sleeve and four bushes were missing completely! Also the two bolts on the 'saddle' were not even finger-tight!
The polybushes Rimmer Bros supplied were eight of the type with a raised ring (i.e. not flat). Four of these are required for either side of the extension, but two other plain bushes and two washers were also used. I don't know whether they were supposed to be there, but I cut the raised ring off four bushes, found a bolt of the same length, drilled out a sleeve to the correct diameter and refitted everything.
Getting the bolts to bite was a nightmare, as the four uncompressed bushes, ONE washer and the flange took up the entire length of the bolt. I was working entirely underneath (car was on a lift) and the bl00dy chassis tubes were in the wrong place
. Half-an-hour of cussing and I got one to bite. After that is slowly fell into place. Tightening the two top bolts enabled me to locate the bolts through the saddle.
Now the gear-change is back to its old sweet self. In fact, it's sharper than ever. Methinks a few words are needed with the mechanic at my local garage.
Now to get the grease from under my fingernails ... the chassis and tunnel were coated in it.
