Which Tire Size Question

My 86 280i is currently shod with 225/45/16 tires which have reached the end of their life (dry rot). The selection in that size is very limited and basically pricey street/track tires. The car - when it runs - is just a weekend cruiser, no track work. And I'm not changing rims or rim sizes.

What would you all recommend as as a more common and available substitute? 225/50/16? Thanks
