Hey all,

Got a slow leak from my gearbox, which is (i think) causing me to stall when I'm stationary and change gear. I want to top it up so I can drive it to a garage, but i'm finding very mixed signals with regard to the fluid required.

It's the three speed auto (Ford C3) and the user manual says it should take 'Hypol light (80w gear oil)' but as far as I can tell you only use that for manual transmissions? The leak in question is red and thin, so it's unquestionably ATF in there right now. What do you lot use?

Cheers,
J

ATF in an Auto, no question about it.

I've go a C3 auto in my Scimitar and I always use Comma - AQF Automatic Transmission Fluid Mineral as stated in my owners manual.

Cheers Nigel, just ordered some.

Knew the handbook couldn't be right - I guess they made so few autos it didn't get checked.

How have you found the C-3 in general?

Best,
J

I really like the C3 in my Scimitar. When I bought it in '93 I was going to change it to manual but I decided to keep it as I really like it. It changes smoothly and all I've done to it is to change the fluid and filter a couple of times.

Yea I've been really impressed by it too (until it sprung it's current leak). Surprisingly snappy and smooth considering how old it is.

My only complaint is that on the 280i it's almost painfully noisy at some speeds what with only having 3 gears!

Actually, I feel the same way about the 4 speed. LOL
