the first major problem is that they dont fit, the spacing of the bolts is different, only slightly but it's defo not the same

Wedge PCD is 112 and Cerbera/Tuscan is 114.3 so across studs the diffenence is approx 2mm. They fit onto the hub because the difference is catered for by the tolerance in the holes but the nuts will not fit snugly. They fit about half an inch further into the wheel arches.

Also remember that:

What sort of seat do the wheel nuts have? If they're a tapered seat then you might be able to get the wheel over the studs with 2mm different pcd, but it certainly wouldn't be safe to drive like that. In any case you still need to make sure the internal shoulder on the wheel fits the corresponding shoulder on the hub otherwise the wheel will not be located properly. If the stud pattern is different I wouldn't put money on the hub locating the wheel properly.

You could redrill the hub with five more holes inbetween the original holes so that your hub will take the 4.5" PCD and fit 5mm spacers to reduce the error in using 35mm ET wheels. Not perfect but should remove excessive stresses.

What is the PCD of the hub, and the wheels? Just because they will go on without any obvious problems doesn't necessarily mean they are right, or safe.

We have enough problems worrying about fatigue on old cars without deliberately creating them.

Totally agree. Used them as a temp while pushing the car around in the garage but the seating is not right which means that the clamping forces needed to hold the wheel in place are not acheived.

Torquing it up and driving can then lead to the bolt and nut cutting into the wheel itself.

BTW this would invalidate your insurance I suspect as the wheels are a very different PCD which would be easy to prove.
