not another wedge owner

Oh well that's the dream gone to waste...
Have a guess how much to insure a TVR Tasmin 280i at 17
Around 3 months after passing test..
Fire + Theft ONLY is..
wait for it...
£5500
YOU MUST BE JOKING
The car will cost less than that.
Oh well looks like it'll be a fiesta or something..:( Not even sure I want to bother taking my test now.
Dave.

Just a sugestion...
I was 17 when I got my 350i. I didn't use it until I was 18, and even with 1 years driving my quote was £5,500 for third party, fire and theft.
Soooo, I put the car in my dads name and just drove it thrid party under the "drive any car with owners permission" clause on my VW Beetle insurance policy. Ok, I had to be mighty careful not to fool around and didn't take any chances when driving, but it allowed me to drive a TVR to the meets and events legitimately. If there had have been any accidents then I was covered by my policy, and if it got nicked etc, then it was covered on my dads premium.
I also paid my dad the premium money too, all £184 of it!

Ooh thanks for that info!
Was thinking about that but the disadvantages are not getting a NCB built up etc.. But just the driving of the car would make me care not.
I would be very careful like you say, wouldnt want to risk it.
Any ideas who would be the best insurance Co. for this?
And can you still get the 'anyone can drive with permission' policies? Do I not have to just be registered as a second driver of the car?
Thanks a lot!
Dave.

WOW thats alot of money BUT you are lucky anyone even quoted you !! Under 25s and over 100 horses are considered a masive risk. Have you tried getting a quote as a second car eg buy a 950 pop fiesta as your everyday wheels and insure that and then get a classic car quote for limited miles etc etc
you dont have to drive the fiesta
but you have to own and insure it
REMEMBER ins comps now have a data base and they record EVERTHING you tell them and swap information and as with everthing its OK when its OK you only come across the small print when you come to make a claim
BE CAREFULL and good luck

What digga suggests may look like it fits the insurance requirements but it does not.
Insurance companies are wise to this and if you crash and the find out (no matter whos fault it is) they WILL investigate and you will likely end up in court and be banned.
The only way you can do what is suggested is that if your father IS the owner and IS the main driver of the car.
This type of insurance fraud is one of the more common ones and insurance companies aren't know for their charity. And for all you know they may even read this forum (there are plenty of police who are members of Piston Heads).
You have 3 options really..
1) Pay the silly money.
2) Convince your father he wants a TVR and he will occassionally let you drive it.
3) Wait until you are over 21,25 or 30. Unfortunately this is why most sports car owners are older.
I know this seems unfair but then again I wanted a TVR 420 SEAC at the age of 17 and I couldnt even get a quote for insurance. So I bought a MK1 escort.
Best of luck with whatever you do and be very careful with insurance companies
Tim.

okies dave, do it another way? .. buy a cheap fiesta for 100 pounds and insure it as your main car .. then buy a wedge and insure on a limited mileage classic policy (only works if you have the use of a modern car as your main car) .. have a 2000 mile limited mileage (you'll spend then rest of the non driving time polishing and tinkering with the wedge anyway so doesn't matter you can only do 2k miles per year) .. that way you get your NCB, plus possibly a cheaper way to insure your wedge. it'll still be expensive no doubt, but every saving helps.
see you tonight
see you tonight

or alternativley buy an 950 festa as a daily driver and go racing in a wedge. that way you get to drive a wedge, and fix / polish it and you get to be a racing driver.....
Thats what one chap ( he might be along soon
) is doing with a chimaera he's just bought. no way could he insure it for the road so he's going to race it....
You might be surprised what you can get a laid up racer for

You called M'Lord...
Actually www.biggreymammalwithbigears.co.uk quoted me £2200 on the Chim for a daily driver. Thats a 23yo with two claims last year, one fault and one non-fault. But I just got the quote out of interest, the car was bought...or is that born...to race.
What you failed to mention dear chap, old chum, is that i need to insure the Tasmin in the next few weeks (ie before BBWF), if not its getting trailered to Ettington.

Iain
