drilled brakes
Discussion
Just got my 350i through the MOT but they told me my brakepads are worn and just 2mm left. Did about 10k with them which is quite some wear...
While I'm going to buy new pads, I was wondering if drilled disks are a solution to overheating and if they are a straight swap with the sollid disks? Rally Design offer them for the granada 262mm....

My mate Keri has some kits with the 262mm Granada disc at reasonable prices including alloy 4 pot calipers. They are vented rather than drilled, though it wouldn't be expensive to get some cross drilling done if you wanted. His email address is keri@keri.co.uk if you want to contact him for more details.
Against overheating: ventilated disks.
To improve on that: grooves.
And bigger diameter, 4-pots instead of less as well of course.
Drilled disks can help, but with increased risk of cracks in the disk if they get really hot. That is why I didn't bother about drilling: have ventilated, grooved disks (and at 300mm with 4-pot calipers)......

as I understand it, these days drilling is more fashion than function.
In the days when the pads gassed up, the drilling allows the gas to escape.
I understand modern pads dont do this
If you look at most race cars, they only have grovved and vented disks not drilled.

road chimaera with drilled and grovved disks
and
Race tuscan with just grovved ones

Just in case anyone's interested, I dropped off 5 pairs of the 262 Wedge vented discs to be grooved today. I should get them back JUST in time for the BigBadWedgetasticPicnic that I DO hope to go to!
Drilled = Baaaad in my opinion, but people want them so I must obey. On the road they are actually ok most of the time, just don't go trackdaying... I'm actually planning to take a stand with the Wedges, No Drilled Discs From ME!
Ta, Keri - Works MS
(Cheers Rog! PS, the "future" 300mm kit is bigger and badder than your engine even if you DO hide an angry snail under your bonnet!
