I need to get a set of patterns for the interior. Anyone know of a trimmer who may have a set I could copy? I thought about giving the factory a call. I could do it myself but would take ages.

I have a set of old carpets that I used as carpet pattens, kindly donated from Andy390.

I made a good set of carpets from these, with very minor adjustments. You are welcome to have a look and see if they would be suitable.

Andy's came from a 89 390, mine was a 89 400 ,but they looked like they would do most Wedges

Not too far from you being in Reading

Cheers

Hello,

I've just replaced the entire interior of my 350i. I removed all the old panels from the car, stripped off the vinyl coverings and gave them all to a local trimmer (Ipswich based). They then duplicated all the panels and made me up new ones ready to fit onto the existing fibreglass bits (dashboard, centre console, door cards etc etc). They left all the bit oversize and just did all the stiching work. I then took each fibreglass panel in turn, recovered them in thin foam and streched the new vinyl coverings over them all. Stuck the edges and trimmed off the excess.

For the carpets, I ripped the entire lot out back to the fibreglass shell. Did a layer of sound proofing, followed by a layer of foam. Then, I bought a roll of carpet from the net and layed all the existing carpet panels on top. I cut the pieces oversize and stuck them in the car, trimmed the excess and finished off with a good hoover.

I also made some brown paper templates of the footwell/bulkhead carpets and gave these to my trimmer who made me up some mats with matching vinyl piping around them.

I had the seats retrimmed in full leather with contrasting piping too for good measure.

Total cost was about 800 quid including materials and lots of hours sticking! There is a lot of work to be done and it really is very time consuming. It was a lot harder to do than I thought too, especially getting the dashboard to fit correctly. The straight lines of the interior dont give you much room for error if the job is to look good.

I also did the carpets different to TVR too. I used a proper piled carpet instead of the flatter type TVR used, so the whole thing was a lot more difficult to fit due to the lack of "stretch".

In total, I used about 9 litres of adhesive and learnt that you need a high temp one if its to remain stuck when the interior heats up during summer.

The final result was really good though, and the whole interior now feels a lot better screwed together. The soundproofing helps to reduce mechanical noise, and the piled carpet has a far better look to it. The interior literally looks brand new now and didnt cost a fortune to do.

The company I used for the stiching work is called Goldsmith and they are located on Bramford Road in Ipswich. I bought the carpet/soundproofing from a company called Coverdale on the internet.

Let me know if you want any of the contact details.

Dan.

Hello,

I just checked and apparently all the old panels went to the tip just the other day! Grrrr..... Soooo, I'm afraid I don't have any patterns to give you.

I do however have the details of my trimmer. The company name is Goldsmith Upholstery and its run by a husband and wife. They really are the most friendly helpful people ever! I took to them my old panels, picked the colour and they made up the new bits exactly as they should be ready for me to stick on.

The number is 01473 744441.

If you mention me *Dan with the green and silver TVR* they will know who I am and will also know what needs making up. They also sell foam and high temp adhesive.

Let me know how you get on or if you need any advice etc etc.

Dan.

You can have a complete carpet job for £400, new hood for £400 all bespoke made ie. they fit! from West Country Trimmers in Devon. You will have to do an internet search to find the number. Ask for Norman or Guy and tell 'em I sent you.

Top blokes to.

I went for the short pile carpet as original as I liked the look of the original. TVR tended to use the longer stuff in the later cars and I don't think it looks right.

Did a top job on my car, well pleased. Also cleaned and swapped the drivers and passenger seats and found about 50p in loose change!.

Had a set of alloy roof struts fitted at the same time. I think Dicky had a goood quote on doing the complete interior including the leather.

You think that's good - you need to get a Cerb - found 15 quid in loose change in mine, shame it made a little dent in the overall running costs but at least the car bought me a beer or 2 for becomming it's new owner

Now that a very good idea might even be an affordable way for me to get mine done eventually. Did you stick with the original colour ?

Nooo, I didnt stick with the original colour. The car used to be done in the usual nimbus grey with dark grey carpets, however the carpets were thread bare, every vinyl panel had a hole or cut in it, the seats were torn to shreads and everything was really, really dirty. Now, I have all the vinyl done in a slightly lighter saville grey, with darker grey seats and contrasting piping, and black carpets.

Went from this:-

To this:-

I have loads and loads of pictures of the interior in all the various stages, from stripped out, to step by step of recovering some of the panels, to fitting the soundproofing, foam and carpets etc.

Quick step by step guide:-

1. Start with one of these...

2. Add some foam and adhesive...

3. ... to make something like this...

4. Take a pre sewn, oversize covering and start streching it over the fibreglass panel

5. When in position, start cutting and sticking it

6. Keep an eye on the front to make sure all the creases are coming out. Believe me, it will take some time and lots of re-sticking

7. But eventually, you should get something like this.

Considering it was a first attempt at anything like this, the results aren't half bad and made a new interior within my price range. I did the same thing for all the other panels in the car too.

Has anyone done this to the 400 stle dash ? as I'm very tempted this winter, but was wondering about it being a bit more complex than the 350 box type dash
