mixture control on idle

The adjustment on the hot wire air flow meter - does that control mixture on idle or does it offset throughout entire rev range? Also is it anti clockwise or clockwise to weaken mixture. I don''t think it is a convention pot as it has no end stops - rather just a continuous turn - so don''t understand how this relates to mixture? Does anybody know how to generally weaken mixture at idle?? Thanks
