Wedge shockers
Discussion
Hi, hope someone can throw some light on this?I have built a car for sprints drag racing etc using a wedge chassis trailing arm type.I have fitted coil over shocks all round so I can adjust springs and damper settings,The first 3 times out it had a rather tired 3.5rover v8 fitted which gave pleasing results(until the oil pressure went)this has now been changed to a 4.6 v8 which has been rebuilt with some work to the heads, mild cam, quad carbs etc,I ran this today but when setting of it started to rock at the back end from side to side this went on halfway down the strip then levelled out,it wasnt snaking but rocking, what mods can be done to this type of back end, as at about 90 mph it got a little scary. Thanks David.
Well you've got the earlier type of rear suspension, which TVR had to replace with the A frame version when the 390 came along, as the suspension couldn't cope with the power/torque, although I think the main problem initially was driveshaft / uj breakages. Do you have an LSD? Who designed the suspension set-up for you?
I've occasionally had a very juddery launch on acceleration tests, as if the wheels are alternately gripping and spinning. Just put it down to my technique.

Hi, thanks for the quick response, I dont have an lsd the shocks I think I got from tower racing?.At first I had the same problem as you but I think its called axle tramp I set the shockers a little softer and this seemed to cure it.I think you are correct with the power torque idea, is there any way of beefing up the back end ie.rose joints, superflex bushes etc?
Is the trailing arm still canterlevered? If so try boxing it in so its supported on both sides, as this canterlevered pivot is a known weak point.
One of the specialists, Tower View possibly, do a rear link package that attached to the rear most outrigger support that apparently helps the rear supension geometry.

Yep, Tower View do a bolt on upgrade to the trailing arm. It may also be worth speaking to Richard Moore at Moore Racing. The Tasmin Challenge guys have been through a big development cycle on the early trailing arm Wedges. www.moore-racing.com/
I've seen this problem from time to time, each wheel picking up alternately. I just grit my teeth and drive through it.
It seemed to go away when I rebushed the 350i back end with poly bushes, and is indicative of 'something loose' back there.
Incidentally the 390 upgrade also increased the UJ sizes, and I had these driveshafts fitted on the 350i that I'm selling, and the UJ wear/breakage problem went away.

Thanks Adam what is involved with this 390 upgrade?,is itpossible to change to the "wishbone type rear suspension? if so whats involved with this?
Not directly as the chsssis is very different. Like most things can be done but the cost is very expensive . It would be easier/cheaper to track down an A frame chassis and use that.
Hi, having looked in the garage this morning I have an A frame diff carrier and can get the two bottom wishbones to suit would it be possible to make these fit and what would be needed at the hub end ?,I have the larger drive shafts with the big UJs ready to fit ,what else is needed and would it be feasible.Changing the chassis would not be possible, thanks.
